Rutger published: Controversy as Gay MP Faces Labour Suspension Over Offensive Messages

The political landscape was recently shaken by the suspension of Oliver Ryan, a gay Member of Parliament, from the Labour Party. This decision came after Ryan's involvement in a controversial WhatsApp group, where he allegedly participated in discussions that mocked a fellow MP’s sexuality.

Oliver Ryan, who gained his Burnley seat after overturning a Conservative majority last year, found himself at the center of a scandal involving a WhatsApp group known as "Trigger Me Timbers." This group comprised Labour councillors, party activists, and included health minister Andrew Gwynne.

The scandal erupted when the Mail on Sunday exposed a series of offensive messages exchanged within the group. The revelations included racist comments about Black veteran MP Diane Abbott, along with tasteless jokes made by Gwynne about a pensioner who hadn’t supported him possibly passing away before the next general election.

Details of the Controversial Messages

Messages in the group reportedly displayed Ryan mocking the sexuality of an unnamed Labour MP and criticizing Colin Bailey, vice-chairman of the Labour Party’s Audenshaw branch in Greater Manchester.

Colin Bailey expressed his dismay to the media, stating, "I am very angry about this. I thought Oliver was a friend, as I did some work for him. You help these people, and they stab you in the back."

Following the exposure of these messages, a swift response from the Labour Party leadership ensued. Andrew Gwynne was relieved of his duties as a health minister and had the whip withdrawn. Meanwhile, Oliver Ryan faced suspension after a meeting with Chief Whip Alan Campbell.

As reported, a Labour Party spokesperson commented, "As part of our WhatsApp group investigation, Oliver Ryan has been administratively suspended as a member of the Labour Party. As soon as this group was brought to our attention, a thorough investigation was launched and this process is ongoing in line with the Labour Party’s rules and procedures."

Public Apology and Reactions

Before his suspension, Oliver Ryan made a public apology via Twitter. In his statement, he said, "I did not see every message but I accept responsibility for not being more proactive in challenging what was said. I also made some comments myself which I deeply regret and would not make today, and for that, I wholeheartedly apologise."

The Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, has reiterated his commitment to maintaining high standards of conduct in public office, emphasizing that no tolerance would be shown towards ministers failing to meet these expectations.

Meanwhile, Greater Manchester Police recorded a non-crime hate incident after receiving several complaints about the messages allegedly from the WhatsApp group. Such incidents are noted when no criminal offense is committed, but the act is perceived as motivated by hostility or prejudice related to protected characteristics, including race, gender, sexuality, and disability.

Further Context on the Exchanged Messages

The Mail on Sunday reported that the WhatsApp group exchanges contained racist and antisemitic remarks. One notable exchange involved Gwynne commenting on Abbott's participation in Prime Minister's Questions, suggesting it was due to Black History Month.

Another member sarcastically inquired about the availability of other Black MPs, further adding, "I’d also take the corpse of [former Labour MP] Bernie Grant." The group also included an exchange involving an American psychologist, with Gwynne questioning his involvement due to his perceived Jewish background.

Regarding the pensioner who had questioned bin collections, Gwynne's message was blunt: "Dear resident, f*** your bins. I’m re-elected and without your vote. Screw you. PS: Hopefully, you’ll have croaked it by the all-outs."

As the investigation continues, the Labour Party remains under scrutiny over its handling of the situation and the broader implications for its members' conduct. The public and media alike are awaiting further developments in this ongoing controversy.
