A Republican lawmaker in Utah has stirred controversy by proposing to rename a street in Salt Lake City that honors Harvey Milk, a pioneering LGBTQ+ civil rights leader, to "Charlie Kirk Blvd," in honor of a right-wing podcaster known for his anti-LGBTQ+ views.
Harvey Milk was a trailblazer for LGBTQ+ rights, serving as one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States. As a San Francisco city councilmember in the 1970s, he was instrumental in defeating the Briggs Initiative, which sought to ban LGBTQ+ individuals from teaching in California schools. Tragically, Milk was assassinated in 1978, but his legacy as a champion for equality endures.
The proposal to rename Harvey Milk Blvd has been put forward by Utah Rep. Trevor Lee (R), who introduced a bill in the state legislature earlier this week. Lee's decision has sparked outrage among LGBTQ+ advocates and community members who view the move as an attack on Milk's legacy and the broader fight for LGBTQ+ rights.
Lee, in an interview with ABC4, justified his choice by pointing out that Harvey Milk was from California and had no direct ties to Utah, whereas Charlie Kirk, though originally from Arizona, died in Orem, Utah. "From the vast majority of Utahns, they would say that Harvey Milk does not have any connection to Utah whatsoever," Lee stated. "But Charlie Kirk does now, especially after being assassinated in the state of Utah."
Critics have pointed out that Harvey Milk Blvd is not a state road, and therefore, the city government, not the state legislature, has the authority over its naming. This has led to questions about whether Lee's proposal is legally feasible.
Trevor Lee's legislative efforts have consistently targeted LGBTQ+ rights. Earlier this year, he introduced a bill aiming to ban Pride flags from government buildings, while allowing Nazi and Confederate flags under the guise of "historic" preservation. His bill proposed banning the rainbow flag, a symbol of LGBTQ+ pride and solidarity.
Additionally, Lee threatened to cut state funding from the Utah Mammoths, the state's NHL team, after they displayed a rainbow-colored logo for Pride Month and expressed support for the LGBTQ+ community on social media. Lee claimed, "Utahns overwhelmingly don’t support pride month," yet offered no evidence to substantiate this claim. His actions have been criticized as attempts to impose his personal beliefs on the broader state policy.
Lee has made several controversial statements regarding LGBTQ+ rights and representation. In a podcast in 2022, Lee suggested that Utah Governor Spencer Cox (R), who had supported some LGBTQ+ initiatives, "might even be transgender." This baseless claim was accompanied by derogatory language and criticism of the governor.
He also claimed that many Black individuals do not support LGBTQ+ rights, stating, "A lot of my friends who are Black, they’d be like, yeah, man, I don’t agree with all that LGBTQ stuff." These comments have been widely condemned as divisive and uninformed.
Lee has been linked to the "DezNat" or "Deseret Nation" movement, a right-wing group advocating for a Mormon, white ethnostate. This movement is not endorsed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and its association with Lee has raised further concerns about his political agenda.
The LGBTQ+ community and its allies have expressed strong opposition to Lee's proposal, viewing it as part of a broader pattern of hostility towards LGBTQ+ rights in Utah. Local activists are mobilizing to resist the bill, emphasizing the importance of Harvey Milk's legacy and the ongoing fight for equality and justice.
The controversy has also drawn attention to broader issues of representation and the power dynamics involved in naming public landmarks. As the debate continues, it underscores the need for continued advocacy and dialogue around LGBTQ+ rights and inclusion.
