In a move that's left many people talking, former President Donald Trump decided recently he would grant a full pardon, setting Michael Grimm free from his past offenses. Grimm, a former U.S. Representative from New York, has quite a reputation due, in large part, because he's known both his criminal history and anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric. Not surprisingly, this decision hasn't sat well, especially with folks in LGBTQ+ circles, who are once again drawing attention back on Grimm's controversial past.
Michael Grimm, who represented New York as a Republican, found himself in quite a legal bind back in December 2014. That's when he had no choice but accept a guilty plea on felony tax fraud charges. It turned out he had been underreporting profits from his Manhattan restaurant, Healthalicious, hiding nearly $900,000 from both federal and state authorities. This misdeed landed him in prison, where he spent eight months in 2015.
Legal troubles aside, Grimm has also made headlines with his anti-LGBTQ+ stance. He's been vocal, making numerous derogatory remarks about LGBTQ+ people and those who support them, further spreading negative stereotypes. Among his accusations are claims against LGBTQ+ rights advocates, where he made baseless allegations about pedophilia and child mutilation.
Grimm's fiery temperament was put on display during a live television moment that still hasn't faded from memory. On January 28, 2014, he caused quite a scene at Capitol Hill by threatening NY1-TV reporter Michael Scotto after Scotto asked a pointed question about Grimm's campaign finances. Grimm's outburst, where he threatened Scotto by saying he'd "break [him] in half, like a boy" and throw him off a balcony, left a lasting mark. Though he later offered an apology, it was hard not remember that volatile moment.
After stepping down from his congressional role in early 2015, Grimm attempted a political comeback in 2018, though he didn't find success this time around. He soon pivoted, finding a niche as a political commentator at Newsmax, a conservative media platform, where he continued sharing his often controversial opinions.
In 2024, life threw Grimm a curveball—he had a horse-riding accident that left him paralyzed. Even this life-altering situation didn't keep him from social media, where he consistently voiced support Trump, especially when it came policies against transgender rights and limiting LGBTQ+ visibility.
Grimm's been known use social media as a sounding board, often aligning with far-right opinions on LGBTQ+ matters. He was quick praise Trump's executive order banning transgender women from competing in women's sports and accused those supporting gender-affirming care "mangling children." His other targets have included drag queens, whom he's accused sexualizing kids, and President Joe Biden when he marked Transgender Day Visibility, which happened fall Easter.
It's no wonder Trump granting pardon sparked concern among LGBTQ+ advocates. Many worry this move might feel like validation Grimm's past actions and thoughts, and could embolden others holding similar views, further sidelining LGBTQ+ individuals.
Activists and organizations advocating LGBTQ+ rights haven't held back in their response—they're outraged about Grimm's pardon. They've encouraged allies remain alert, fighting hard against discrimination and hate wherever it rears its head. They're continually stressed importance pushing policies that advocate equality and ensure everyone's rights are upheld, regardless who they love or their gender identity.
With politics ever in flux, LGBTQ+ community stays dedicated raising awareness, actively opposing harmful language. By staying tapped in and loudly engaged, they're working toward inclusive society, one where discrimination doesn't stand chance.
