The Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine at Washington State University (WSU) has recently come under scrutiny for its involvement in accrediting a series of continuing medical education (CME) courses associated with the Society for Evidence-Based Gender Medicine (SEGM). This organization has been identified as an anti-transgender group by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). The courses, which are freely accessible on SEGM’s website, have raised significant concerns within the LGBTQ+ community due to SEGM’s controversial stance on transgender healthcare.
The courses in question were jointly provided by WSU’s Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine and SEGM, as stated on the course webpage. An "Accreditation Statement" notes that the courses were developed in accordance with the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) requirements. However, it is important to mention that despite this accreditation, the content of these courses is not currently available on the WSU website. This situation has led to a significant debate about the implications of WSU’s association with SEGM and the potential impact on healthcare professionals seeking to improve their competence in transgender care.
According to a report by the SPLC, SEGM is part of a network of organizations that have used pseudoscience to influence public opinion and legislative measures against the LGBTQ+ community. Since its inception in 2020, SEGM members have actively opposed gender-affirming care models, particularly for minors experiencing gender dysphoria. The group has been involved in legislative efforts, such as Idaho’s H.B. 509, which restricts transgender individuals’ rights to update birth certificates, and campaigns to limit gender-affirming care in states like Florida and Texas.
SEGM’s activities have not gone without criticism. The organization played a role in the Cass Review, a report for the U.K.’s National Health Service that questioned the evidence supporting social transitioning and medical interventions for minors. This report faced widespread criticism within the medical community. The SPLC, in January 2024, officially labeled SEGM as an anti-LGBTQ+ hate group, further isolating the organization from mainstream medical and LGBTQ+ advocacy groups.
Notably, Dr. Gordon Guyatt, a prominent figure in evidence-based medicine, has publicly criticized SEGM. Despite initially co-authoring reviews with SEGM, Guyatt has since condemned the group’s misuse of scientific standards to argue against gender-affirming care. In a report by Mother Jones, he expressed regret over his past association with SEGM, describing their approach as "not evidence-based." This condemnation by a respected medical professional highlights the contentious nature of SEGM’s claims and methodologies.
WSU spokesperson Pam Scott has clarified that while the university accredited SEGM's courses, it did not develop the content or financially support the organization. Scott emphasized that the university’s accreditation signifies compliance with ACCME’s standards for educational integrity and scientific balance, but does not equate to an endorsement of SEGM’s viewpoints.
Nonetheless, the association with WSU has lent an air of legitimacy to SEGM’s courses, potentially misleading healthcare providers who seek to enhance their understanding and practice of transgender healthcare. The concern is that well-intentioned providers might unknowingly absorb biased information that contradicts evidence-based best practices.
Dr. Graham McMahon, president of ACCME, has acknowledged the concerns raised by SEGM’s designation as a hate group. He stated that while ACCME cannot comment on specific activities without auditing them, the issues highlighted warrant further inquiry. This situation underscores the importance of rigorous review processes and accountability in the accreditation of medical education content.
The controversy surrounding WSU’s accreditation of SEGM’s courses underscores the ongoing challenges in ensuring that medical education remains unbiased and evidence-based. As the discourse around transgender healthcare continues to evolve, it is crucial for educational institutions and accrediting bodies to maintain high standards that prioritize scientific integrity and inclusivity. The LGBTQ+ community and its allies must remain vigilant in advocating for accurate and supportive healthcare education that aligns with the needs and rights of transgender individuals.
In a bold move to support the transgender community and take a stand against transphobia, a laser tattoo removal business in England is offering a significant discount to clients who want to remove their Harry Potter-themed tattoos. This initiative is a response to the controversial statements made by JK Rowling that have sparked widespread outrage within the LGBTQ+ community. Manchester Laser NQ, [...]
