Bar owner in Idaho stirs controversy with "Hetero Awesome Fest" during Pride Month

Mark Fitzpatrick, who owns Old State Saloon in Boise, Idaho, sure knows how ruffle some feathers. He's planning a festival called "Hetero Awesome Fest" right smack in Pride Month, and people are buzzing about it. The two-day event, set up on June 20th and 21st, has already drawn a firestorm on social media.

Embracing traditional values

This isn't Fitzpatrick's first rodeo. Last year, his "Heterosexual Awesomeness Month" featured perks like free beers just because you're a straight, cisgender guy. For this year's fest, he says he wants it all about celebrating traditional family values, taking a stand against what he sees as creeping liberal agendas.

The festivities will rock Cecil D. Andrus Park, right near Idaho's State Capitol. Expect live tunes, plenty good food and drinks, plus speakers cheerleading traditional family values.

An uproar and backlash

As you might imagine, "Hetero Awesome Fest" has rattled a lot more than a few folks online. Questions swirl about why on earth someone would celebrate heterosexuality during Pride Month. Fitzpatrick's outspoken past about LGBTQ+ issues doesn't exactly help his case, as he alleges Pride events are pushing harmful narratives.

In a promo video, Fitzpatrick went bold, declaring this festival as a stand that faith, family, and freedom shouldn't be tossed aside. He insists it isn't about targeting anyone but rather about shedding light on what he deems unsettling cultural shifts.

Mixed responses and a bit more history

Online reactions are all over; some folks are poking fun, asking if straight people really need a "safe space." Others liken it all something outta a comic skit's notebook. Historically speaking, "straight pride" events in America have often led straight (no pun intended) towards controversy, sparking confrontations between attendees and LGBTQ+ demonstrators.

Critics say these events don't really drum up any genuine pride in being straight but rather stoke division and hostility towards LGBTQ+ folks.

Questioning motives and money trails

Why now, and why this? Folks are scratching their heads at Fitzpatrick's timing and intentions. While he claims it promotes traditional values, his record online suggests there might be more friction in his motives than he's letting on.

Funding attempts have raised eyebrows too. Fitzpatrick even went hat in hand seeking out companies usually backing Pride events. They turned him down flat due without that nonprofit label they require.

The cultural conversation continues

"Hetero Awesome Fest" highlights ongoing cultural tug-of-wars, especially around big public celebrations like Pride Month. While celebrating being straight isn't inherently problematic, how you do it and when can seriously tilt public opinion.

Festival organizers are calling out everyone involved or watching from afar—saying, let it be a respectful chat. As support and opposition square off, what this festival truly means in these cultural divides isn't entirely clear yet.

We'd love your take. Join in below. What does celebrating identity mean in today's ever-evolving society, and how can we genuinely foster both understanding and respect among differing viewpoints?
