Booz Allen Hamilton, a well-known consulting firm based in Washington, D.C., recently made headlines when it decided not no longer sponsor this year's WorldPride festival in D.C. This unexpected move comes in response political changes that have led federal agencies reducing their focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) due a new executive order.
As a major player in federal contracting, Booz Allen Hamilton has pressed pause on all DEI initiatives and removed diversity goals from management's objectives. They've even dropped DEI from their official company language. Although they're stepping away from being a headline sponsor, they insist their support diverse employee groups isn't wavering.
WorldPride organizers and members LGBTQ+ community are openly concerned about Booz Allen's decision. Ryan Bos, executive director Capital Pride Alliance and an organizer WorldPride, voiced his disappointment, recalling Booz Allen's past involvement like sponsoring floats and providing important economic insights that helped boost event's profile in D.C.
"It really stings seeing such a big supporter pulling out when we need them most," Bos lamented. "Sure, we get they're in a tough spot with their federal contracts, but it still hits our community hard." This move by Booz Allen seems part a wider government trend cutting back on inclusive language, LGBTQ+ terms included.
Inside Booz Allen, many workers are upset by this change. "Booz Allen has always been one top advocates LGBTQ+ rights. This feels like we're losing something we believed in," one long-time employee said. Employees feel let down, especially given company's past commitment diversity inclusion.
These developments come amid other cultural shifts. For example, a WorldPride concert at Kennedy Center was called off due new leadership actions. Such changes add a sense dwindling support LGBTQ+ initiatives events.
Despite Booz Allen stepping back, other sponsors like Marriott and Hilton stand firm in their support WorldPride, providing much-needed funds ensure festival goes on. However, challenges still persist.
