Tragic Loss of a Pioneering LGBTQ+ Advocate

In a deeply saddening event, South African Muslim communities have united in condemning the tragic killing of Muhsin Hendricks, acknowledged as one of the first openly gay imams. The police are intensively pursuing the suspects, with reports suggesting they are "hot on the heels" of those responsible for this heinous act.

Muhsin Hendricks, aged 57, was a respected figure who led a mosque in Cape Town. This mosque was renowned as a welcoming and safe space for LGBTQ+ individuals and other marginalized Muslims, providing a sanctuary for those seeking acceptance and understanding. Tragically, Hendricks was shot dead on the morning of Saturday, February 15th, when the vehicle he was in was ambushed near Gqeberha in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province. The South African Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) has issued a strong statement condemning the murder and decrying any acts of violence against LGBTQ+ individuals or any community. The MJC’s statement reads, "It has been alleged that the killing may have been motivated by hatred toward Muhsin Hendricks due to his views on same-sex relationships. While the MJC has consistently maintained that Muhsin’s position is incompatible with Islamic teachings, we unequivocally condemn his murder and any acts of violence targeting members of the LGBTQ community or any other community."

The MJC emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect in a democratic, pluralistic society, stating, "As members of a democratic, pluralistic society, the MJC remains steadfast in advocating for peaceful coexistence and mutual respect, even amidst divergent views. We extend our sympathies to the bereaved during this difficult time and pray for peace and justice to prevail."

Similarly, the United Ulama Council of South Africa (UUCSA) expressed their disapproval of the imam's teachings on same-sex relationships, yet unequivocally condemned the act of murder. The UUCSA stated, "We consequently call on everyone to act responsibly, avoid spreading unverified information, and refrain from making assumptions that have the potential to heighten tension and put others at risk, based on mere suspicion."

They further urged the community to allow law enforcement to conduct their investigation without interference, ensuring that justice is served based on evidence and due process. "Upholding justice and respecting due process are essential to ensuring calm and order," the UUCSA stated.

South Africa's deputy justice minister, Andries Nel, spoke to the media, highlighting the urgency and dedication of the police force in tracking down the suspects responsible for Hendricks' murder.
