Rutger published: Comparing Andrew Cuomo’s and Zohran Mamdani’s Records on LGBTQ Issues
**By Nico DiAlesandro** As New York City gears up its mayoral election, all eyes are on how each candidate stands on LGBTQ rights—a hot-button issue among voters. Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist and state assemblyman, leads in polls and presents a significant challenge against former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, now running as an independent. This race isn't just about picking a new mayor; it's a test case on how progressive values might take root within New York's Democratic Party. If Mamdani wins, this could signal a shift toward more progressive policies, especially around LGBTQ rights—a central topic in today's political scene. ## Andrew Cuomo: A Mixed Legacy on LGBTQ Issues Andrew Cuomo's track record on LGBTQ matters has its highs and lows, marked by both sizable legislative wins and personal controversies. **1977:** Back in his dad Mario Cuomo's mayoral campaign, Andrew was linked with a controversial slogan, "Vote Cuomo, Not The Homo," aimed at opponent Ed Koch. Despite this, Koch went on support Cuomo's governor bid in 2010, revealing just how complicated politics can get. **June 24, 2011:** Cuomo scored a big win by signing New York's Marriage Equality Act, making it just one in a handful at that time allowing same-sex marriage. It was a milestone moment in equality. **Dec. 11, 2014:** He set new guidelines making sure transgender individuals get equal access under health insurance, branding New York a pioneer in trans healthcare policies. **Jan. 25, 2019:** Cuomo pushed through two landmark laws—outlawing conversion therapy on minors, and banning anti-trans discrimination with GENDA. However, Cuomo's later tenure took a hit from harassment allegations and connections with anti-LGBTQ figures. His 2025 campaign treasurer appointment, Kristofer Graham, caused an uproar among LGBTQ advocates, given Graham's controversial views. ## Zohran Mamdani: A True Progressive Advocate Representing New York's 36th district, Zohran Mamdani has unwaveringly stood by LGBTQ rights from day one in office. **Feb. 2, 2021:** Mamdani backed overturning New York's "Walking While Trans" law, which unjustly targeted trans women, especially those who are women of color. Cuomo later signed off on this repeal. **Feb. 17, 2021:** Mamdani co-sponsored a bill that simplified gender marker changes on legal documents—a move embraced wholeheartedly when it became law. **June 10, 2023:** Known as a "shield law," Mamdani gave his nod, ensuring protection rights on gender-affirming care, showcasing his unyielding dedication towards trans rights. Additionally, Mamdani pitched a well-rounded plan, pushing $65 million toward gender-affirming care and proposing an Office dedicated solely towards LGBTQIA+ Affairs. ## On The Campaign Trail: Endorsements and Debates Mamdani has won over influential Gen Z personalities and LGBTQ icons, boosting his campaign among younger, progressive New Yorkers. Conversely, Cuomo's support from polarizing figures has left sections within LGBTQ circles disenchanted. Cuomo's attempt at throwing shade on Mamdani, by pointing out his Ugandan dual citizenship and connections, hasn't gone unnoticed. While it has sparked wider talks on global LGBTQ matters, Mamdani stays loyal in advocating human rights, irrespective where anyone calls home. ## The Election's Real Impact This election's outcome won't just affect New York City—it'll send ripples nationwide about where we stand on LGBTQ rights. With both candidates offering contrasting blueprints, voters are now deciding whether they'll hold on established norms or lean towards a progressive shift. As election day inches closer, all eyes are trained on each candidate and their vision in dealing with LGBTQ issues, setting precedence in future dialogues. The verdict from New Yorkers might shape not only LGBTQ rights but also set a new path forward within Democratic Party.
