The organization responsible for the vibrant Minneapolis Pride celebrations has experienced a remarkable show of community support, raising nearly $100,000 from public donations after choosing to part ways with a major corporate sponsor.
The nonprofit, Twin Cities Pride, made the difficult decision to reject a longstanding sponsorship from a large retail company after the corporation decided to roll back its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. This move was seen as a significant step backwards in supporting the LGBTQ+ community and prompted Twin Cities Pride to make a stand.
In a conversation with the local media, Andi Otto, the Executive Director of Twin Cities Pride, expressed deep regret over the sponsor’s decision to scale back their DEI programs. "This was the final straw," Otto explained. "At a time when we face numerous challenges from various quarters, it's important to uphold our values and commitments."
For nearly two decades, the retail giant had been a consistent supporter of Twin Cities Pride, contributing significant funds annually. The decision to end this partnership was not taken lightly, as it left a notable financial gap for the organization. However, Otto emphasized that standing up for what's right was more important than funding.
In a bold move, Twin Cities Pride took to social media, reaching out to their supporters and the broader community to help offset the loss of funding. "This year, we're taking a stand for inclusion and equity," they announced. "We ask our incredible community to join us in this effort."
The response was overwhelming. Within just 24 hours, the community not only met the initial goal of $50,000 but nearly doubled it, raising close to $100,000. "The generosity we've seen is truly heartwarming," Otto said. "Every additional dollar raised beyond our goal will be reinvested into the community, ensuring every contribution makes a difference."
The decision by the corporate sponsor to scale back DEI initiatives came in the wake of political pressure and backlash from certain groups. The company had historically been the target of criticism from some quarters for its annual Pride merchandise and support for LGBTQ+ initiatives. Following a particularly challenging year of boycotts, the corporation announced it would limit its Pride merchandise to specific markets and reassess its external commitments.
Despite scoring highly on the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index, which measures LGBTQ+-inclusive policies, the company’s recent actions cast a shadow over its previously strong reputation within the community. The decision to halt external DEI surveys and initiatives was seen as a step back, prompting Twin Cities Pride to reconsider their partnership.
While the door hasn’t been fully closed on future collaborations, Otto made it clear that the current priority is to align with partners who genuinely support the community's values. "We are open to discussions, but right now, we need to ensure our events remain spaces of empowerment," Otto stated.
The company spokesperson reiterated their commitment to supporting their LGBTQIA+ employees and continuing internal programs. They highlighted the importance of creating an inclusive work environment and expressed hopes of revisiting external partnerships in the future.
As Twin Cities Pride looks towards the future, they remain committed to fostering an inclusive environment where every individual can celebrate openly and joyfully. The outpouring of support has strengthened their resolve to continue advocating for the rights and dignity of the LGBTQ+ community.
For more updates and ways to support, Twin Cities Pride encourages everyone to stay connected and involved in future activities and events, ensuring that together, the community remains a beacon of hope and inclusion.
