Community support shines at Rehoboth Beach's drag brunch

What was supposed be a protest against a drag brunch at Goolee's Grille in Rehoboth Beach turned out quite differently. A church group had planned a demonstration on July 20, but when their protest permit was pulled, it paved a path not just cleared, but celebrated, by supporters turning out in droves. What unfolded was a vibrant celebration full-hearted with acceptance and solidarity, with resounding love echoing through every cheer.

From protest plans arise unexpected celebrations

It all started when a group announced they were going protest Goolee's Grille's popular drag brunch. But that plan fell through before it took off. According Sussex Pride, a major player in organizing a counter-protest, that church group's permit was scrapped just one day ahead. St. Ann's Church in Bethany made it clear some outside group had mistakenly linked them with this rally. Their stance was simple and clear: “We're about prayers and support, not protests. Our faith calls us towards love and respect, period.” An apology followed, hoping it smoothed over any unintended discord.

A joyful show and a united front

Even though that protest never materialized, it didn't stop about 300 people from showing up at Goolee's Grille. They were there not just supporting a local eatery but standing firmly with LGBTQ folks. The air buzzed with joy, filling Rehoboth Beach with a warmth that marked it as a place truly welcoming and inclusive.

Sussex Pride's Executive Director, David Mariner, was thrilled. “No protest? Amazing!" he said. "This turnout isn't just numbers; it's a loud message that we won't stand by any hate or intolerance."

People there echoed this vibe, showing how many believe gathering strong in numbers reaffirms Rehoboth Beach as a proud sanctuary where love stands loud and proud over hate.

Goolee's Grille: more than just a meal

Goolee's Grille isn't just another restaurant; it stands at Rehoboth Beach's heart. For eight years now, it has been a beloved gay-owned spot, with drag brunches becoming part and parcel with its identity. Owner George Stakias couldn't be prouder. “A day expectedly divisive turned celebratory,” Stakias mused. “It was a reminder. Our community's love and unity are powerful. So, from my heart, thanks! Every day, our neighborhood gets stronger, and it feels great knowing we're feeding more than just appetites.”

Embracing diversity with open arms

Since its start in 2004 and its Rehoboth relocation in 2014, Goolee's Grille has been a cornerstone in its community. Their monthly drag brunches aren't just fun; they're a commitment, a promise that love and welcoming vibes will always be there.

The events swirling around that planned protest only solidified this promise. Support flooded in from locals and visitors alike, reminding everyone that Rehoboth Beach will always be a space where all are welcome, no matter who you love or how you express yourself.

Love triumphs over division

As that day wrapped up, what lingered wasn't discord but unity. This wasn't just a lesson in community strength. It was a testament: Love and acceptance will always beat out division. The events reinforced that coming together matters - standing against any form intolerance makes a difference. The narrative was clear: Goolee's Grille and its community will not just survive, but thrive, as bastions where love, diversity, and support aren't just ideals but lived realities. Indeed, what might have been a protest day morped beautifully and unexpectedly, affirming that togetherness will always carry louder echoes over any other noise.
