Thanks to overwhelming generosity, the fundraiser not only met but surpassed its goal, securing $90,000 in total. One particularly generous anonymous donor even contributed $10,000 to the cause.

The challenges Matthew faced went beyond financial support from his parents. Due to MIT’s financial aid policies, which are contingent on a student’s parental financial status, Matthew found himself ineligible for assistance, despite providing documentation from therapists, psychiatrists, and organizations that advocate for LGBTQ+ students lacking family support. Irene Dong, in her heartfelt description of the fundraiser, underlined the adversity Matthew has faced. "Matthew’s parents cut off their financial support after discovering he is transgender," she wrote. "Since then, he has worked multiple jobs, maxed out on loans, and exhausted every option to stay afloat. Our goal is to raise money to fund his senior year’s tuition and housing, to allow him to graduate this spring."
Had the fundraiser not succeeded, Matthew would have been forced to leave MIT just weeks before completing his degree, a situation that would have derailed his long-held dream of pursuing a career in astrophysics.

“Thank you so much to everyone who has donated,” Matthew wrote in an update on the fundraiser page. “I’m amazed at how many people have come together to support me! I was forced to move out of my dorm this morning, but I am safe and have a place to stay temporarily. I’m in the process of late registering for the fall and the spring, and I am still keeping up with my classes. It looks like I am on track to graduate this May.”
Matthew also shared his plans for any additional donations, stating they would be used to repay existing student loans, further alleviating the financial burden that has weighed heavily on him.
