Rutger published: Community Churches Unite to Celebrate Love: The Big Gay Wedding Event

In a beautiful display of love and unity, three Unitarian churches in Rochester, New York, collaborated to host a remarkable event, known as the Big Gay Wedding, dedicated to celebrating the love of LGBTQ+ couples. This free and heartwarming event took place last weekend, providing an opportunity for many couples to marry amidst growing concerns about the future of marriage equality.

The event was graciously hosted by the First Universalist Church of Rochester, the First Unitarian Church of Rochester, and the Unitarian Universalist Church of Canandaigua. These churches united their resources and efforts, supported by generous contributions from local vendors who donated cakes, photography services, and floral arrangements to make the day even more special.

A Celebration in the Face of Uncertainty

With the political climate causing anxiety among many in the LGBTQ+ community, the event offered a safe space for couples to affirm their love legally and publicly. Unitarian Church of Rochester’s lead minister, Shari Halliday-Quan, emphasized the importance of such events in times of uncertainty. “Headlines and state legislatures are looking to repeal same-sex marriage and marriage equality,” Halliday-Quan explained. “We thought, great. One of the things churches do really well is rites of passage like weddings. And so that’s the thing that we, the Unitarian Universalist congregations, can offer.”

Rev. Lane-Mairead Campbell, Minister of the First Universalist Church of Rochester, described the event as “a way that we could provide some certainty for our community and be able to provide some space to be able to get married legally, safely, quickly, inexpensively.”

Love Knows No Bounds

Among the couples who tied the knot at the Big Gay Wedding were Caliana and Angeles Rolon Torres. For them, the opportunity to marry without the financial burden was invaluable. Caliana expressed, “The fact that we can do something like this, and there’s any organization doing something like this that enables people to get married, not only for free, but also before people are worried about it and things like that, is incredible. Like, outside of the marriage itself, the fact that this is happening is an amazing concept.”

This event was not just about the legal recognition of love but also about fostering a sense of belonging and safety within the community. As Halliday-Quan affirmed, “We’re helping couples secure rights that they’re worried will be taken away. We all hope that that won’t be the case. But what I want folks to know, and what I think today really celebrates and uplifts, is that queer and trans people have a place in our community, that you are loved and worthy.”

Creating a Lasting Impact

The event served as a powerful reminder of the roles that faith communities can play in advocating for and supporting LGBTQ+ rights. By providing this space, the Unitarian congregations demonstrated their commitment to inclusivity and the affirmation of all identities.

In addition to the weddings, the gathering fostered connections and community spirit. Attendees celebrated together, creating a supportive atmosphere that transcended beyond the day's festivities. The event highlighted the importance of community-led initiatives in creating lasting change and providing hope and solidarity in challenging times.

The Big Gay Wedding stands as a testament to the resilience and power of love, showing that even in the face of adversity, communities can come together to support and uplift one another. It was a historic occasion for Rochester’s LGBTQ+ community, one that will be remembered for its message of hope, love, and inclusivity.

As society continues to grapple with issues of equality and rights, events like the Big Gay Wedding remind us all of the enduring power of love and community. They inspire us to continue striving for a world where everyone can live freely, authentically, and with dignity.
