Colton Underwood is thoroughly enjoying the journey of fatherhood. The former professional football player and star of The Bachelor has embraced his new role as a gay dad, which he describes as his "whole personality." His Instagram is filled with heartwarming photos of his family of three, capturing moments of joy and love.
Underwood has been open about his excitement for fatherhood and how it has transformed his life. On the Milk Drunk by Bobbie podcast, he shared, "I’m over excited, and I am oversharing for sure. Rightfully so, though, because I had a whole year of getting the path to parenthood, and it didn’t feel right to go through all that so publicly to just say now you can’t see."
Colton and his husband, Jordan C. Brown, welcomed their son, Bishop, in September. The couple embarked on a fertility journey that involved surrogacy, and Underwood bravely spoke about his struggle with low sperm count. He has been candid about these challenges both in the media and on his podcast, Daddyhood.
Underwood also discussed the experience of being a public gay family. "I’ve always sort of looked for how I fit into the gay community since I came out. I love the fact that I’m a gay dad. I want to, not promote it, but show people and normalize the conversation around what it looks like."
He acknowledges the mixed reactions on social media, stating, "I know people have a lot of opinions and social media can be mean at times, but it’s been overwhelmingly positive so far by sharing him and our family… I just want to share that happiness and joy and serve as a role model to anyone on their journey to know there’s a light at the end of the tunnel."
Looking to the future, Colton and Jordan hope to expand their family further.
Underwood, who came out in 2021 on Good Morning America, has had a transformative journey. He recounted his past struggles with his identity, "I learned in the Bible that gay is a sin," and reflected on the homophobic insults he encountered in school sports, which kept him in the closet for years.
Despite the joy of fatherhood and coming out, Underwood's journey has not been without controversy. His reality show, Coming Out Colton, was met with criticism from parts of the LGBTQ+ community. The series, which featured Out Olympian Gus Kenworthy as Underwood's "guide" to being gay, was criticized for being opportunistic and insensitive.
The series faced backlash for its timing and perceived motivations, with some suggesting it was a career move rather than a personal revelation. Underwood also had to address allegations from his past, including a restraining order filed by Cassie Randolph, a former girlfriend and Bachelor contestant. Despite the controversy, Underwood apologized publicly to Randolph.
Colton Underwood's journey highlights the complexities of coming out and redefining one's identity while in the public eye. As he embraces fatherhood, he aims to be a positive role model for others in the LGBTQ+ community. He hopes to inspire those who may be struggling with their identities to see a brighter future.
Underwood's story is one of personal growth, love, and the challenges that come with living authentically. As he continues to share his experiences, he contributes to the ongoing conversation about acceptance, family, and the diverse paths to parenthood available to LGBTQ+ individuals.
