Rutger published: Colombian President Addresses Transphobic Reactions to Affair Rumors

In a recent swirl of controversy, Colombian President Gustavo Petro has found himself at the center of a media frenzy. Reports have emerged accusing him of having an affair with Linda Yepes, a well-known transgender newscaster. What has caught the attention of many, however, is not just the allegations themselves, but President Petro’s response to the public reaction.

During a visit to Panama for the inauguration of the new Panamanian President, José Raúl Mulino, rumors began circulating after a video surfaced allegedly showing President Petro walking hand-in-hand with a woman in a blue dress, believed to be Yepes. The two were seen posing for photos, further igniting speculation. Despite the mounting whispers, neither Petro nor Yepes has confirmed the authenticity of these claims.

Challenging Transphobia

Instead of outrightly denying the affair, President Petro took a bold stand against the transphobic backlash that followed the rumors. In a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, he emphasized the importance of protecting individual freedoms and criticized the discriminatory nature of the public’s reaction. He wrote, "I have always considered that intimacy is the 'last level' of freedom, the last trench of being free, and I will preserve this principle until I write about myself or die. But these thousands of transphobic messages that have exploded in the hands of a right-wing, deeply exclusive, ignorant and discriminatory society must be rejected by the president."

Petro’s defense of Yespes and his rejection of transphobia resonated with many in the LGBTQ+ community, who see his comments as a necessary stand against discrimination. His assertion that human equality involves both physical and mental emancipation struck a chord, highlighting the ongoing battle against societal prejudices.

"Every progressive knows that human beings are equal and that the fight for that equality implies physical and mental emancipation," Petro continued in his statement. "No one who considers themselves human can generalize transphobia in weak minds or slavery and discrimination. This action does not express animality but brutality. That’s why they murder those who are different and by the millions. That is why Nazis existed and exist."

Linda Yepes Speaks Out

Linda Yepes, meanwhile, has not denied being in Panama, but has remained tight-lipped about her involvement with Petro. When approached by Univision regarding the alleged affair, Yepes commented, "I was in Panama. I love Panama. I cannot speak about the details yet."

Her past comments on her transition provide further context to the situation. Yepes has openly discussed the challenges she faced as a transgender woman. In a past interview, she expressed the limited expectations society had set for her, saying, "I kept saying to myself If I am trans, I’m either going to be a hairstylist or a prostitute because those are the only paths society has practically handed to us."

A Progressive Presidency

Petro, who has been married to his wife since 2000, is Colombia’s first left-wing president in recent memory. His presidency marks a shift in the nation’s political landscape, as he rose to power during a contentious election cycle. The campaign saw the left battling against far-right political forces, ultimately resulting in Petro's victory.

In his final remarks on the matter, Petro declared, "I am heterosexual, but you will never hear or read a transphobic word from me. Because not only would he stop being a man, but also human." His words further solidify his stance on acceptance and equality, underlying the importance of addressing transphobia in society.

The unfolding narrative surrounding President Petro and Linda Yepes highlights critical issues of privacy, freedom, and the pervasive nature of discrimination. As the story develops, it continues to spark conversations about the intersection of politics and personal identity, and the need for a more inclusive and understanding society.
