The chilling case involving Yostyn Andres Mosquera, a 34-year-old from Colombia, has reached its grim conclusion with his conviction in a horrific murder in which an innocent same-sex couple lost their lives. The victims, Albert Alfonso, 62, and Paul Longworth, 71, were found in a shocking state last year, with their bodies hidden in suitcases. The trial opened a window on some truly horrific details, leaving a scar on everyone in this community.
On July 15, 2024, Yostyn Mosquera, living in Shepherd's Bush, London, was charged by Metropolitan Police with these terrifying murders. The case began when Albert and Paul's dismembered remains were discovered in suitcases on Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol and in a West London flat. This appalling crime couldn't help but send waves through both local and national communities.
Albert, originally from France, had settled in London, becoming a British citizen, and shared his life with his partner, Paul. Sadly, their London flat became their final resting place, as Mosquera, a supposed guest, turned their sanctuary upside down.
Mosquera, who was involved in adult films, initially met Albert online. A seemingly friendly relationship began between him and Paul, leading them on a trip first outwards; visiting Mosquera in Colombia, and later welcoming him in return trips back at their London home.
But during Mosquera's stays at their Scotts Road flat, what appeared as friendship concealed dark agendas. The trial uncovered his meticulous planning, including buying a freezer online and scouring internet searches about head injury techniques.
The nightmare unfolded on July 8, 2024. Evidence during trial showed Mosquera violently attacked Mr. Longworth with a hammer, a brutal act that resulted in his death. He then hid his body in a bed, trying temporarily in vain, one would hope, from getting caught.
Later, Mosquera turned on Mr. Alfonso, stabbing him 22 times during an intimate moment. What Mosquera didn't know was that cameras captured it all. This footage became key evidence, although its disturbing content deeply affected everyone in court.
One juror, overwhelmed by what they saw, couldn't face court again right away. Sky News' Alice Porter, reporting from court, said it was one piece she won't soon forget. The judge had even cautioned everyone about its graphic nature beforehand.
After committing these horrific acts, Mosquera took extreme steps in attempts at covering up his crime. He decapitated his victims, placing their heads in a newly acquired freezer. By July 10, he rented a van and transported remains in suitcases intending, it seems, on forever hiding his atrocious crimes.
The prosecution made a strong case around Mosquera's greed being a driving force. He'd been researching their property values and had even stolen cash after killing Mr. Alfonso. It painted a picture not just premeditated but chillingly motivated by profit.
DCI Stride, an officer on this case, called it one he won't ever forget. Mosquera's cold behavior post-murder, celebrating before exploiting bank accounts, just added more horror onto an already dark case.
Sentencing awaits on October 24, after a psychiatric evaluation seeks insight on Mosquera's mental state during these acts.
This case has undeniably marked everyone involved, underscoring vulnerabilities within our LGBTQ+ community, highlighting again why protection and unwavering support remain so vital.
