Finding Comfort in Community

Enrolling at a Christian university in Arizona, I was always hyper-aware of my actions and demeanor. However, making friends within the LGBTQ+ community at my school provided an unexpected sense of comfort. Though the university proudly supported LGBTQ+ students, there was still an underlying pressure I felt to suppress parts of my identity.

Many of my LGBTQ+ peers had distanced themselves from their religious backgrounds, but I chose a different path. I was resolute in maintaining my faith while embracing my bisexuality. As a student at Ottawa University Arizona (OUAZ) in Surprise, I found a unique space where I could nurture my spirituality and embrace my identity without compromise.

Family and Acceptance

My journey of coming out began in community college, where I first confided in my mother. Overwhelmed with emotion, I shared my truth with her. Her unwavering love and reassurance meant the world to me.

Confronting my father was another challenge entirely. He epitomized masculinity in my eyes, and I feared his reaction. After two years of contemplation, I finally opened up to him. To my relief, his response was filled with love and encouragement. "Never stray from who you are," he told me. His acceptance was a profound source of strength for me.

Challenges in Athletics

With my family's support, I felt empowered to face the challenges of college athletics. Joining the men's volleyball team, I encountered both acceptance and resistance. Some teammates were welcoming, while others struggled to look past my sexuality.

Our team had its share of internal struggles, particularly in our first year at the newly established athletic program at OUAZ. Without upperclassmen for guidance, our team dynamics were initially rocky. Over time, however, we learned to work together and embrace each other's differences.

Strengthening Bonds

By the second year, we had developed a deeper understanding and camaraderie. New players joined the team, and those of us who had been there from the beginning took on leadership roles. We realized that our unity was crucial to our success.

By my senior year, our team was more than just a group of athletes. We had formed a brotherhood, united by shared experiences and mutual respect. Among my closest friends was a fellow athlete who was also gay, and our bond was a testament to the acceptance we cultivated within our team.

Embracing the Future

Embracing my bisexuality has enriched my life with diverse experiences and friendships. While the journey has its challenges, it has also been profoundly rewarding. I've learned to cherish the journey and remain hopeful for the future.

Despite societal challenges, the LGBTQ+ community continues to make strides. Our resilience is a beacon of hope, and I am proud to be part of a community that champions acceptance and love.

At 23, I graduated from Ottawa University with honors, equipped with degrees in Communications and Psychology. As I look towards the future, I am eager to explore opportunities that align with my passions. I reside in Phoenix, ready to embark on new adventures.

For those within the LGBTQ+ sports community, know that you are not alone. There are networks and resources available to support and connect you with others who share your journey.
