Caleb Persanis, captain and a standout player on State University at New York's rugby team in New Paltz, has his own refreshing take on sharing his identity with his teammates. He didn't go down any conventional route like posting on social media or making a grand announcement. Instead, Caleb simply let his personal life unfold naturally through his connection with his boyfriend, Daniel.
"I never really had a big 'coming out' moment," Caleb says. "I just had a boyfriend, and people kind've put two and two together." This laid-back attitude helped Caleb effortlessly combine his personal life with his sports life, creating a seamless transition.
Caleb met Daniel on their first day at freshman orientation in 2021, right over a barbecue—I mean, talk about sparks flying! As Daniel became a familiar face at games and team hangouts, Caleb's "coming out" story practically wrote itself.
Even though Caleb had been open about his sexuality since his high school days, there's always that little bit extra when you're stepping onto a new scene. "Every time you're part a new group, there's that moment where you need come out—again," he admits. But in college, he found nothing but positivity. A lot credit here goes back history inclusivity team has always nurtured.
Caleb remembers another openly gay captain who led by example, paving a path acceptance. "His leadership created a safe space I'm so thankful," he says. This pre-existing culture made him feel right at home and ready take charge.
Caleb draws a truckload courage from other LGBTQ athletes' stories. "I looked up Nick McCarthy, an openly gay pro rugby player," he shares. Nick's success made Caleb realize he could be true self, too. Their love rugby, well, that was icing on cake.
Rugby runs deep in Caleb's family, and it all started with his dad setting up rugby program in Westchester, N.Y. His older brother also pushed his passion. As he looks ahead, Caleb practically buzzes with excitement over remaining part vibrant LGBTQ rugby community both here and abroad. "My dad played till 45. I'll beat that, no question," he laughs.
Under Caleb's watchful eye, New Paltz rugby team blossomed from humble group six 25 strong. Recruiting hasn't been easy, but with Coach Joel Venables' help, they've made waves. "Rugby mixes all fun bits from other sports without downsides," Caleb says, explaining why he's passionate about its mix athleticism and teamwork.
By being open about who he really, Caleb can zero in on sport, without burden keeping secret. He gets it—anyone not out might fear backlash. "People are kinder than you expect," he assures. "But fear? That can be tough." He urges others listen gut when mulling over sharing their identity, knowing every journey unique.
"You'll be fine," Caleb advises. "Follow instincts, most those worries just noise. There welcoming groups, especially in sports." With such backing, Caleb shines both in life and on field as scrum half, where leadership and decision-making are key.
Thankful all support, Caleb's always game connection and spreading word inclusivity sports. His tale really shows how big a difference representation and a supportive community can make in sports.
