Rutger published: Cold Case of 1984 Gay Man's Murder in North London Revived as Two Brothers Stand Trial

NORTH LONDON MURDER CASE REVISITED
The long-standing mystery surrounding the murder of Anthony Littler, a 45-year-old man, in 1984 has finally reached the courts. Two brothers, Michael and Anthony Stewart, are currently on trial at the Old Bailey, accused of the brutal murder of Littler, who was attacked in East Finchley while on his journey home.

THE NIGHT OF THE CRIME
On the fateful night of May 1, 1984, Littler, a civil servant and lover of traditional ales, had attended a gathering of The Society for the Preservation of Beer from the Wood in Surrey. It was on his way back that he was reportedly ambushed in an alleyway by the Stewart brothers, then aged 15 and 18. Littler succumbed to severe head injuries, his body discovered with his personal belongings intact, suggesting robbery was not the motive.

A CASE GONE COLD
Despite the efforts by police and public appeals through platforms like BBC Crimewatch, the case ran cold for several decades. The initial investigations in 1984 included thorough neighborhood inquiries, during which the Stewart brothers claimed they were not present at the scene and had no familiarity with the location.

NEW EVIDENCE EMERGES
The breakthrough in the case came nearly 30 years later when a family dispute prompted Daniel Stewart, the younger sibling of the accused, to provide new information to the police. His testimony led to the reopening of the case in 2022, reigniting interest and leading to the current trial.

CHILLING CONFESSIONS AT THE TRIAL
During the trial, the jury heard disturbing details from Daniel Stewart’s account. He relayed to the police that his brothers had not only confessed to the murder shortly after it occurred but had also bragged about their actions, referring to it as "queer bashing." The prosecution presented this as evidence of the brothers' habitual violence against individuals they perceived as gay.

HISTORY OF VIOLENCE
Prosecutor John Price KC outlined to the jurors a pattern of behavior, suggesting that the Stewart brothers had engaged in similar acts of violence against other men, making it a regular activity. This background painted a portrait of two individuals who enjoyed inflicting harm on solitary strangers, particularly targeting those they assumed were from the LGBTQ+ community.

INSIDER TESTIMONIES
Adding to the gravity of the accusations, Michael Stewart’s former girlfriend testified about his admissions related to the crime, recounting instances where he showed her the crime scene and spoke freely about the events of that night. Her statements provided further corroboration to the prosecutor's narrative.

FAMILY ACCOUNTS
In a 2025 police interview, another relative, the Stewarts’ sister Gaynor, confirmed the violent tendencies of her brothers, describing their "queer bashing" activities along with other racially motivated attacks. Such testimonies fortified the prosecution's argument about the brothers' violent inclinations during the early 1980s.

SEARCH FOR JUSTICE
As the trial continues, questions remain regarding the involvement of an unidentified third party, suspected to have participated in the attack. The court proceedings, adjourned temporarily, are anticipated to resume shortly, with the hope of finally bringing closure to a case that has haunted the community for decades.

This revisitation of Littler’s case not only seeks justice for him but also highlights the violent prejudices faced by the LGBTQ+ community, both in the past and present.
