Christian Dobrick, a pioneering figure in professional soccer, has recently made headlines by coming out as gay, marking a significant moment for inclusivity in the sport.
At just 29 years old, Dobrick has been serving as the coach of the Under-19 team at FC St. Pauli, a renowned club in Germany’s Bundesliga, since June 2025. His decision to publicly embrace his identity is a historic step, as he becomes the first coach from a Bundesliga men’s club to openly discuss being gay.
Dobrick's journey began in the town of Flensburg, located near Germany’s border with Denmark. Over the years, he honed his coaching skills at various clubs, including Holstein Kiel and TSG Hoffenheim in Germany, and Red Bull Salzburg in Austria. Despite his success, the need to conceal his true self took a toll on his mental health.
In a heartfelt interview with German media outlets NTV and RTL, Dobrick shared the difficulties of living a double life. "This charade has drained me too much," he admitted, illustrating the internal conflict he faced while hiding his sexuality from players and colleagues.
St. Pauli’s response was swift and supportive, with the club affirming their solidarity on social media. "Of course, we are behind him and his coming out. Because it’s actually quite simple and should apply to everyone: Love who you want!" they stated, embodying the club's inclusive values.
Dobrick has also faced adversity due to his physical disability, being born without a left forearm. Despite whispers and doubts about his capabilities, he persevered, driven by his passion for soccer tactics and analysis. "My worry now is that soon it might be said: ‘That guy only has one arm and he’s gay too — you can’t give him an important job.’ But I want to break the silence," Dobrick declared.
His journey was partly inspired by Thomas Hitzlsperger, a former Germany international player, who came out post-retirement. "That did something to me. I was 17 years old then," Dobrick reflected, highlighting the impact of visible role models in sports.
In his personal life, Dobrick has been in a committed relationship with his boyfriend for four years, a relationship previously kept hidden from the public eye. Reflecting on past experiences, Dobrick recalled the countless times he had to deny his true self, even cropping his boyfriend out of photos.
His decision to come out was further reinforced by a meeting with Jürgen Klopp, a prominent ally in the sports world. Klopp’s words, "You can be whoever you want to be, but you have to stand for something," resonated deeply with Dobrick, ultimately empowering him to embrace authenticity.
As Dobrick prepares to share his story with his U19 players, he acknowledges the stigma surrounding homosexuality in sports. Nevertheless, he trusts his players to respond with understanding and maturity. "They’re great people," he affirms, looking forward to a future where authenticity is celebrated.
St. Pauli continues to uphold its reputation as one of the most inclusive clubs globally, providing a supportive environment for individuals to express their identities. While Dobrick doubts his coming out will immediately inspire other players to follow suit, he recognizes the immense pressure on gay footballers to conform to heteronormative standards.
For Christian Dobrick, the path ahead is sure to hold new challenges. Yet, free from the burden of hiding his true self, he steps forward with renewed strength and determination, paving the way for greater acceptance and inclusivity in professional soccer.
