Celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton has opened up about the profound internal struggle he faced during his journey of coming out as gay. Appleton, a well-known British personality, recently spoke candidly about his experiences on Olivia Attwood's Olivia's House podcast.
Appleton, who had a whirlwind marriage with actor Lukas Gage, shares two children with his former girlfriend. The couple was together for a decade before Appleton came to terms with his sexuality. He recalls the internal conflict he grappled with as he realized he was gay, particularly concerning his children, son Billy and daughter Kitty-Blu.
Reflecting on his fears, Appleton expressed the anxiety he felt about how his revelation might impact his children. "When I told the kids, I just felt like all that bullying, all that fear, and all of that, I guess, abuse I went through as a kid, I was putting onto them," Appleton shared on the podcast.
As a parent, he was deeply concerned about protecting his children from harm. "If someone hits your kids in the playground, you want to go find the person responsible. You have that protective instinct," Appleton explained. The idea that he might be the source of their distress weighed heavily on him.
He described feeling like a disease, as if his very being was a plague infecting others with suffering he couldn't control. This self-perception caused him immense pain and led to a period of deep personal struggle.
Appleton admitted that he didn't experience same-sex attraction until a surprising encounter at a hair show. "A man tried to kiss me one night, and at first, I thought it was strange. I was so drunk, I brushed it off," he recounted. However, as he became friends with this man, Appleton began to understand his true orientation.
Despite these realizations, he attempted to return to his former lifestyle, believing he could continue as he had before. However, it soon became clear that this was not sustainable, and he had to confront his reality.
Tragically, Appleton reached a point where he believed his absence would be better for his children than his presence as a gay father. "Telling the kids was awful," he recalled. "I felt like it would be better for them to have a dad that was dead than a dad that was gay. It was a horrible experience."
Fortunately, his ex-girlfriend Kate, who remains a close friend, intervened at a crucial moment. "She saved my life," Appleton acknowledged. Her support was pivotal during this tumultuous time.
Since then, Appleton has found happiness and success, both personally and professionally. His daughter Kitty-Blu often accompanies him to red carpet events, and she has become an influencer in her own right, with over 135,000 followers on Instagram. His son Billy, on the other hand, prefers a more private life but occasionally appears on Appleton's social media.
Appleton's story is one of resilience and acceptance, demonstrating the profound impact of coming to terms with one's identity. It highlights the importance of support systems and the life-changing power of acceptance.
