Rutger published: Children’s Book Celebrates an 8-Year-Old Trans Boy's Soccer Journey

“Jacob’s Transition Goals” is a vibrant children’s book by author and former soccer player Arthur Webber. This charming tale, aimed at young readers, focuses on the life of an 8-year-old transgender boy named Jacob who has a passion for soccer. The book will be available globally on April 21.

Arthur Webber, a British 28-year-old who transitioned from a soccer midfielder to a writer, shares that the story is partially inspired by his own experiences. Growing up, Webber played on a boy’s team without fully understanding his identity, but always knew that he wanted to be part of the boys’ team.

In the book, young Jacob is depicted as playing soccer with all his heart, supported by a coach who fosters a sense of teamwork and acceptance within the squad. The narrative is designed to resonate not only with children but also with parents and coaches, offering valuable lessons in inclusivity and encouragement.

Illustrated by the talented Hui Qing Ang, the book’s illustrations capture the excitement and energy of the game, making each page a delightful experience for readers. The story not only entertains but also addresses broader themes of identity and belonging in sports.

The Journey Behind "Jacob's Transition Goals"

Arthur Webber’s transition from writing essays on sports inclusion to authoring a children’s book marks an important milestone in his career. When he began his transition at 13, Webber temporarily stepped away from soccer, believing there was no place for him in the sport. However, he later found his way back through his involvement with TRUK United FC, an inclusive club that embraces diversity.

The idea for Webber’s book emerged after TRUK United FC made history by fielding the first all-transgender men’s team during the Transgender Day of Visibility in 2023. A friend and fellow player, who worked for a publisher, suggested to Webber the concept of writing a children’s book centered on a transgender character in sports. With enthusiasm, Webber accepted the challenge.

During the book's three-year development, the climate for transgender athletes in the UK became increasingly challenging. Governing sports bodies imposed restrictive policies, predominantly affecting transgender women, reflecting a broader societal shift towards a more hostile stance against transgender individuals. This culminated in a UK Supreme Court ruling in 2025 that significantly affected trans rights.

Overcoming Challenges

In response to these changes, Webber’s book includes an adult’s guide that explains how transgender children can engage with football in the UK, despite the evolving policies. To ensure accuracy, Webber proactively contacted the Football Association (FA) to clarify existing policies and discovered an unpublished document relevant to transgender men.

Realizing the importance of this information, Webber decided to make it public, advocating for transparency and better support for transgender athletes. His actions have helped galvanize grassroots football clubs to become active in challenging the restrictive measures.

Creating Space in Sports

Arthur Webber actively participates in London’s LGBTQ football scene, playing for Leftfooters FC and the trans-inclusive TRUK United. Despite the challenging environment, he believes in the power of community and representation to create spaces where transgender individuals can thrive.

Recounting his own experience, Webber reflected on the impact of representation in sports. At 13, he gave up soccer due to a lack of visible transgender role models, but now hopes his book can inspire young people to believe in their place within sports.

Webber remains steadfast in his commitment to fostering inclusive environments, stating, “I’m hopeful that this book will help trans people know there is still space for them. It's challenging to maintain these spaces in the current climate, but we will overturn these bans eventually.”

“Jacob’s Transition Goals” is not just a book; it’s a beacon for change and acceptance in sports, encouraging young and old alike to embrace diversity and inclusion.
