As the political climate in Washington becomes increasingly tense, Dr. David J. Johns, the executive director of the National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC), remains steadfast in his mission to secure a better future for Black and queer communities in America. With the prospect of a second Trump administration looming, Johns speaks candidly about the challenges ahead and the work that remains to be done.
"I’ve felt a visceral reaction to the idea that everything seems to be on fire for the past 18 months," Johns shared in a recent interview. He emphasized the importance of defending democracy and the crucial role of education in this ongoing battle.
The NBJC, formed in 2003, is dedicated to empowering Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer+, and same-gender-loving individuals in the U.S. Johns cautions against viewing elections as the sole benchmark for change, arguing that systemic inequalities have long existed beyond electoral cycles. He warns that the pervasive feeling of powerlessness is a significant barrier to progress.
Since the Voting Rights Act of 1965, Black Americans have fought for full participation in democracy. However, obstacles remain, from voting suppression to housing and educational segregation. Johns highlights the need for intergenerational efforts to address these persistent issues.
Through his podcast, "Teach the Babies," Johns delves into the history and impact of landmark decisions like Brown v. Board of Education. His academic background in sociology and education informs his approach to discussing how diverse identities shape lived experiences.
NBJC’s surveys reveal that health care and affordable living are top priorities for Black communities, and there's a strong desire for better support of LGBTQ+ rights. Johns refutes the notion of inherent queerphobia within Black communities, pointing instead to generational divides.
Johns believes that current "culture wars" are designed to sow division and spread misinformation. These tactics, he argues, are intended to fracture coalitions that unite for progressive causes. A significant part of NBJC's agenda focuses on addressing housing shortages, compounded by systemic discrimination.
Johns advocates for rediscovering and embracing African traditions of community and affirmation, drawing inspiration from figures like Sobonfu Somé, who speaks of "gatekeepers"—individuals who mediate between worlds and identities.
In facing modern challenges, Johns turns to historical wisdom. He stresses the importance of community, mutual aid, and rejecting colonialist notions of privilege. He’s also revisiting the teachings of bell hooks and other luminaries to counteract misinformation and prepare for future civil rights battles.
Johns acknowledges the potential risks he faces as an outspoken advocate but remains committed to ensuring his community is prepared for any eventualities.
Having worked within the corridors of power, Johns continues to urge allies to commit to diversity, equity, and inclusion, prioritizing moral integrity over short-term gains. Above all, he champions the importance of community solidarity and the power of storytelling in driving policy change.
"If we don’t work better together, the consequences will be dire. But we have better odds of overcoming challenges collectively," Johns asserts, urging us to heed the lessons of our ancestors.
