Champion Ice Dancer Paul Poirier Engaged to Longtime Partner

Paul Poirier, the celebrated Olympian and multimedal-winning ice dancer, recently announced his engagement to his boyfriend, Kevin, marking yet another joyous milestone in his already illustrious career. Known for his exceptional performances on the ice, Poirier shared the news of his engagement in a heartfelt and intimate manner.

"We did a thing 💛 (he said yes)," Poirier joyously announced on Instagram, sharing the special moment with his followers. The proposal, though casual, was imbued with personal significance for the couple. "It was a very casual proposal at home during our evening routine," Poirier, 33, shared. "It was really nice to share that quiet moment together, and then to share the news with our families and closest friends. We’re both very excited!"

While no date has been set for the wedding, the announcement underscores Poirier's commitment to living his life openly and authentically. As an openly gay athlete, he continues to inspire others with his courage and dedication to both his sport and personal life. Poirier, who describes himself as an introvert, found the quiet, home-based proposal to be perfectly aligned with his personality.

A Life of Achievement and Authenticity

Poirier's achievements on the ice are nothing short of extraordinary. Alongside his ice dancing partner, Piper Gilles, he has clinched multiple accolades. The pair has consistently dazzled audiences, securing gold medals at the Canadian Championships and the Four Continents Championships in Seoul, as well as a silver medal at the World Championships in Boston. With their eyes set on the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, they are preparing to represent Canada on the world stage once more.

The journey of Poirier and Kevin together began in the fall of 2020. Over the course of five years, their relationship has blossomed into a deep and abiding partnership. "In that time he’s really become my favorite person and biggest source of support in all facets of life," Poirier expressed with affection for his future husband.

Embracing Identity and Inspiring Others

Poirier’s decision to come out publicly in 2021, just a year before the Beijing Winter Olympics, was a pivotal moment. It was motivated by his desire to demonstrate that LGBTQ athletes can thrive at the highest levels of competition. "[Being a gay athlete] hasn’t been something that I’ve really talked about very much, especially in a public setting," Poirier explained. "I’ve had this attitude that my private life is my private life and my life outside of skating is my life outside of skating. I haven’t necessarily allowed all of those things to [blend] together. I think with the lead-up to the Olympic Games in the next year, I definitely see opportunities to share what we do and who we are to a much wider audience, and that opportunity is not lost on me."

As Pride Month approached, Poirier recognized it as a poignant time to share more about his personal journey and how his sexuality has shaped his identity both as a person and an athlete. His story serves as a beacon for young queer athletes navigating the complexities of identity within the world of sports.

Looking Forward

With over a decade of professional skating behind him and a bright future ahead, Poirier continues to capture hearts both on and off the ice. His engagement to Kevin is a testament to the authentic life he strives to lead, celebrating love and commitment in all its forms.

Fans and followers can keep up with Paul Poirier's journey and his ongoing career by following him on Instagram. His story of love, resilience, and triumph continues to inspire many within the LGBTQ community and beyond.
