Rutger published: Celebrating Trans Athletes: Team Trans-Tastic Shines in Vegas and Beyond

After a vibrant tournament in Las Vegas, the community soccer project "Kicking Out Transphobia" is basking in the glow of positivity and success. In a world where trans athletes often face significant challenges, "Team Trans-Tastic" has become a beacon of hope and resilience.

"Kicking Out Transphobia" proudly entered their team into the Sin City Classic, a renowned multi-sport event, and returned home with bronze medals and a trophy. However, the true victory was the friendships formed and the powerful statement made by the team just days before the introduction of anti-trans policies in the White House.

Forging Connections and Breaking Barriers

The captains of "Team Trans-Tastic," Aaron Wixson and Shakira Madrigal, were instrumental in organizing the team and leading them to success. Kicking Out Transphobia's founder, Yunio Martinez, praised their efforts and highlighted the significance of their participation.

Aaron, who usually plays for San Diego Sparks, was thrilled to join the team in Las Vegas. He shared his excitement about playing with an all-trans team, emphasizing the unity and support among players, regardless of language barriers. "Everyone was so supportive and welcoming. It’s an amazing feeling to play with other people like you," Aaron said.

Kicking Out Transphobia began as a charity event in Philadelphia in 2022 and held its first all-trans match at the following year's Sin City Classic, with support from the International Gay and Lesbian Football Association. Yunio, who also serves as the IGLFA's Diversity Director, expressed pride in the team's accomplishments.

Inspiring Stories and Personal Triumphs

Aaron Wixson was honored with the Julia Zuniga Award for Fair Play, named after a trans soccer player who was tragically killed in Mexico. His journey from a U.S. Marine veteran to a visible trans athlete has been one of courage and leadership. "The most important thing to me is visibility, especially now," Aaron said. "Any young person should be able to see themselves in their favorite sports player."

For co-captain Shakira Madrigal, joining "Team Trans-Tastic" was transformative. Hailing from Leon, Mexico, Shakira became involved in soccer later in life, after a friend's passing inspired her to engage with the sport. She recounted how her involvement brought visibility and acceptance for the trans community, fostering respect and understanding.

Shakira also initiated the first trans team in the state of Guanajuato, the "Jewels of San Pancho," which has helped trans girls move away from negative influences and embrace sports. "Thanks to football, they became more accepted by the heterosexual community, generating respect," Shakira shared.

Looking Ahead: Expanding Horizons

After the success in Vegas, Kicking Out Transphobia plans to continue its mission by hosting a seven-a-side tournament in Mexico City during Trans Day of Visibility. Aaron, now back in California, expressed his hope for the project's expansion. With Yunio's infectious enthusiasm, Kicking Out Transphobia aims to change perceptions and inspire the next generation.

Through partnerships with organizations like IGLFA and potential collaborations with FIFA, the project seeks to create more inclusive and diverse spaces in sports. Kicking Out Transphobia remains committed to its cause, determined to make the game more gender-diverse, joyous, and beautiful.

In a message to trans youth facing challenges, Yunio wrote, "To all trans youth facing attacks from the new executive order: You are seen, you are valued. Hang in there — better days are ahead. One day, we’ll all be celebrating like Team Trans-Tastic!"
