"His daily Broadway sing-alongs, vibrant outfits, and genuine love for his students filled our community with energy and laughter," they shared.
Born and raised in Little Rock, Shaw had a distinguished 38-year teaching career. He graduated from Little Rock’s Catholic High School for Boys and pursued higher education with zeal. He earned two bachelor’s degrees: one in philosophy from St. Meinrad Seminary College in Indiana and another in elementary education from the University of Minnesota in St. Paul. Shaw furthered his education with three master’s degrees in secondary education and history, special education, and school administration, obtained from the University of Arkansas, The Catholic University of Washington, D.C., and Trinity College in D.C., respectively.
Patrick began his teaching journey in 1987 as a fourth-grade general education teacher in Little Rock. He dedicated the early years of his career to teaching at Catholic schools before moving to Minnesota, where he continued to influence young minds as a fifth and sixth-grade teacher and physical education instructor. During the 1990s, Shaw also contributed to the Minnesota AIDS Project, where he supported programs for people living with HIV and AIDS.
Returning to Little Rock in 1998, Shaw chaired the Theology Department at the Mt. St. Mary Academy, where he developed comprehensive theology lessons and a social justice program for students. In 2002, Shaw relocated to Washington, D.C., embracing roles as both a classroom teacher and vice principal at several schools, including Benning Elementary School and Chavez Prep Public Charter School.
Patrick Shaw’s commitment to education spanned more than three decades, leaving a legacy of inspiration, kindness, and dedication to his students. Dusty Martinez described Shaw’s teaching career as "38 wonderful years, inspiring generations of students with his passion, wit, and kindness."
Patrick is survived by his father, Thomas H. Shaw, his brother, James Shaw, sister Angela Mahairi, and his cherished niece and nephews. "A living tribute to the full and beautiful life he lived," Martinez noted, ensuring Patrick's spirit will continue to inspire those who knew him.
A celebration of life is scheduled to be held in Washington, D.C., at JR.’s bar, one of Patrick’s favorite places, during the weekly Saturday "Showtunes" event.
