50 years strong: celebrating inclusion and unity at Bet Mishapachah
Bet Mishapachah, a vibrant LGBTQ synagogue in Washington, D.C., stands on a remarkable milestone—its 50th anniversary. Since its founding in 1975, Bet Mishapachah has been a source and symbol love, acceptance, and spiritual connection, welcoming LGBTQ Jews and their allies not just in D.C. but from all over. To commemorate this incredible journey, they're planning a fantastic gala on October 25 at Washington Hebrew Congregation's hall, located at 3935 Macomb St., N.W.
A night you won't forget: celebrating five decades together
Organizers describe this gala as a "glittering evening filled with laughter, music and tribute.” It's not just about celebrating past successes but also honoring influential leaders and trailblazers who've made a difference at Bet Mishapachah and in LGBTQ rights. Among those being celebrated are Rabbi Emeritus Bob Saks and Evan Wolfson, a nationally recognized LGBTQ rights lawyer and founder Freedom To Marry, a vital force in winning same-sex marriage rights.
The birth Bet Mishapachah: creating a sanctuary
Bet Mishapachah, aptly named "House Family," emerged from a deep need a safe space where LGBTQ Jews could freely practice their faith and embrace who they are without judgment. As a member reflects, "Since we started 1975, we've been a beacon love, acceptance, and spiritual connection LGBTQ+ Jews and allies in our nation's capital and beyond." Founded by small group visionaries, it quickly blossomed a diverse, thriving community that's supported countless individuals and families through time.
Reflecting on 50 years: thoughts from our executive director
Synagogue's executive director, Joshua Maxey, shares his excitement about this monumental anniversary: "Celebrating our 50th anniversary truly special," says Maxey. "Our congregation was born from courage LGBTQ Jewish individuals who didn't feel comfortable, perhaps even safe, their own communities and synagogues. They courageously started their own community, and here we are, 50 years later, thriving and proud."
A warm and welcoming community that continues thrive
Currently with about 190 members, Bet Mishapachah holds its Friday evening Shabbat services at Edlavitch D.C. Jewish Community Center, situated at 1529 16th St., N.W. Thanks its inclusive and friendly vibe, it keeps drawing people from all walks life, making it an essential part D.C.'s cultural and spiritual fabric.
Shining a light on LGBTQ Jewish contributions in D.C.
In this milestone year, Bet Mishapachah's story also holds a special place in a featured exhibit at D.C.'s Capital Jewish Museum. The exhibit, "LGBTQ Jews in Federal City," highlights substantial contributions and experiences LGBTQ Jews in Washington, D.C.
