In 2025, Calamia's efforts to open up competitive distance running to nonbinary athletes resulted in significant triumphs. They celebrated victories on both roads and trails, pushing against outdated norms that didn't fit their identity.

The Milestone Achievement

"It was perfect timing," they remarked. "While our country navigates turmoil and pain, the inclusion of a nonbinary division in the Tokyo Marathon brings hope and visibility. It's a positive change that excites people."

Their London Marathon win completed this milestone, yet left them hungry for new challenges. Calamia turned their focus to trail races, beginning with the TransRockies event, where they emerged as the overall winner. Such openness and dedication reflect their commitment to being the role model they wished they had.

Calamia’s journey toward becoming a leader in sports inclusivity began with an internal conflict between their love for running and their evolving gender identity. In 2016, they left their collegiate team at St. Louis University to embrace their nonbinary identity. By 2019, they were advocating for change to compete as their true self.

Calamia faced challenges, including a significant eligibility battle with USA Track and Field over their hormone therapy. Though victorious, the experience fueled their determination for more inclusive sports opportunities.

"Nonbinary divisions don’t take anything away," they explained. "They add to the experience, creating a more inclusive, competitive, and exciting environment."

Calamia’s activism extends beyond competition. Through 2 Hot 4 Hoodies, an initiative started in 2020, they provide gender-affirming clothing to those in need. A highlight of 2025 was their effort to distribute gear at the Javelina 100K in Arizona, where support surged as they raced. This initiative underscores their commitment to blending competition with meaningful impact.

"I’m often accused of making things political," Calamia said. "But participating in these conversations isn’t a choice for me. I can’t just show up and run without addressing these issues."

Calamia envisions a future where their efforts not only open doors for nonbinary athletes but also elevate inclusion in major trail events. As they look towards 2026, they remain committed to their goals and to maintaining visibility and advocacy.

"Trans people have unique perspectives and ideas that can transform the world," they said. "We must continue to share our voices and collaborate to elevate our messages."
