CDC Vaccine Official Resigns Over Data Manipulation Concerns

Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, the well-regarded Deputy Director for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, has resigned in a bold stand against what he describes as "radical non-transparency" and "unskilled manipulation of data" under the current administration. Dr. Daskalakis, a prominent figure in public health and a champion for LGBTQ+ health, announced his resignation Wednesday afternoon.

In his resignation statement, Dr. Daskalakis expressed deep concerns with the direction of the agency under Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. He stated, "After much contemplation and reflection on recent developments and perspectives brought to light by Secretary Kennedy, I find that the views he and his staff have shared challenge my ability to continue in my current role at the agency and in the service of the health of the American people."

Concerns Over Data and Policy

Dr. Daskalakis highlighted the alarming shift in how the CDC is being used as a tool to craft policies that do not reflect scientific reality. He criticized the administration for prioritizing political ends over public health, stating, "I have never experienced such radical non-transparency, nor have I seen such unskilled manipulation of data to achieve a political end rather than the good of the American people."

The resignation letter was a searing condemnation of the administration's approach to public health. Dr. Daskalakis noted that since Kennedy's leadership began, there has been an intentional undermining of trust in vaccines and an alarming shift towards favoring natural infection and unproven remedies, which could set public health back decades.

Advocate for LGBTQ+ Health

Throughout his career, Dr. Daskalakis has been an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ health. His tenure includes serving as deputy health commissioner in New York City during the COVID-19 pandemic and later directing the CDC’s Division of HIV and AIDS Prevention under President Joe Biden. His efforts have been particularly focused on aggressive outreach to the LGBTQ+ community to ensure equitable access to health services.

Despite his achievements, Dr. Daskalakis has faced criticism from far-right groups due to his public identification with the LGBTQ+ community and his distinct personal style, including his tattoos and leather attire. On the same day, CDC Director Susan Monarez was dismissed for refusing to rubber-stamp unscientific directives. Dr. Debra Houry, Chief Medical Officer, and Dr. Daniel Jernigan, Director of the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases, also announced their resignations.

In his resignation, Dr. Daskalakis expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the public and reiterated his commitment to science and the health of communities. He concluded, "Public health is not merely about the health of the individual but about the health of the community, the nation, the world. The nation’s health security is at risk and is in the hands of people focusing on ideological self-interest."
