Rutger published: California's Hasty Decision on Transgender Athletes: A Disservice to Sports and Youth

My dad wasn't just my first coach; he was my biggest mentor. He showed me how important it was not just how you hit those starting blocks, but also how you fall in love with running, especially those grueling 400 meters. He always encouraged me, even when I was one little fish in a big pond, reminding me never, ever, take a lazy jog on a pass route.

Sports wisdom that stands eternal

His advice was simple but hit home. “Don't cheat yourself or anyone else,” he'd say, delivering it with a blend right between tough love and genuine kindness. Today, these words seem even more significant with all this talk about transgender athletes in sports.

The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) could've really used some wisdom like this when they dealt with AB Hernandez. She shines in high jump at Jurupa High, making waves in long jump too, with skills that put her right among California's top young athletes. Her mom, Nereyda, calls her driven and dedicated, just wanting a chance in sports like any other kid.

A fight that's all about fairness

Following all rules, AB Hernandez finds herself in a hotbed, where political pressures and anti-trans sentiment mix it up. The CIF's controversial call gave extra spots in competitions explicitly reserved cisgender girls, saying Hernandez displaced them. Even though she's met all qualifications, this decision seems like a slap in her face.

Adding fuel, CIF said if Hernandez medals, a duplicate goes out a cisgender girl who performed well. This not only offends Hernandez but discounts efforts from all participants.

As a trans person who deeply loves sports, this feels incredibly wrong. It sends a message that fairness isn't on offer if you're not cisgender, ignoring people like AB Hernandez who dedicate themselves just as fiercely.

Tackling damaging stereotypes

When someone says, "you're not really a girl," it crushes your spirit, your hard work. AB Hernandez shouldn't have her victories marred just because some folks can't accept who she truly Cisgender girls, on their end, hear they need shielding from competitors like her, a hard worker now seen as an outsider.

These ideas push harmful stereotypes — implying trans girls aren't genuine girls, and cis girls are inherently weaker in sports. It only divides people more, based on assumptions that hold no water.

Safeguarding sports' true spirit

Why should Hernandez have share her spotlight if she's not tied with someone else? Handing out another medal only props up groundlessly conservative claims and weakens sports' integrity. It's using young athletes as pawns in a political chess match. Athletes need stick together, support their trans peers, and call out those misusing sports' platform.

The true meaning behind a fair game

Over my years in sports, I've seen what a "level playing field" really means. A jump runway doesn't change based on who you are. Its size stays put, and what counts are your grit, training, and maybe a bit luck.

Sports should highlight this equality, where everyone tackles identical hurdles and seizes equal chances. The CIF's recent actions miss this spirit, skewing where effort and talent should speak loudest.

The actual winners here aren't athletes but those persistently dissatisfied voices with their prejudices. Meanwhile, young athletes, regardless gender identity, face fallout from adults who derail sportsmanship's core values.

What this decision does, it dims what sports could be, disrespects all athletes, and stands opposite my dad's basic but powerful rules. We need aim higher, towards a future acknowledging talent and commitment, leaving all bias and prejudice behind.
