Rutger published: Bruce Mouat Speaks on Coming Out and Its Impact on His Curling Career

Bruce Mouat, a talented curler from Team GB, has recently opened up about his journey of coming out and how it significantly impacted his career in curling. Speaking in a televised interview, Mouat reflected on the personal challenges he faced and the positive changes that followed after he embraced his true self.

The Turning Point: From Struggle to Freedom

During the interview, Bruce Mouat candidly shared that there was a time when keeping his sexuality a secret was negatively impacting his performance on the ice. "Coming out was a tough time for me," he confessed. It was during a low point in his sports career that he first acknowledged his struggles aloud, confiding in a sports psychologist. "The first ever person I told was actually a sports psychologist because I wasn't really performing very well," Mouat said. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of a journey toward authenticity and improved well-being.

"I wasn't really enjoying my curling," he continued. "But I really think that it helped me to feel comfortable within the team environment and now, 12 years later, I'm going to my second Olympics feeling pretty good about myself." This newfound comfort and acceptance not only enhanced his personal life but also translated into a more focused and liberated approach to his sport.

Embracing Authenticity and Finding Love

Mouat made the courageous decision to come out to his curling team in 2014, when he was just 19 years old. This step towards authenticity paved the way for a more genuine connection with his teammates and allowed him to thrive in a supportive environment. "I am maybe now a role model," Mouat remarked, acknowledging the importance of visibility and representation in sports.

In 2021, Mouat met his partner, Craig, who added another layer of joy to his life. With humor and affection, Mouat recounted how Craig, unfamiliar with curling, used a clever icebreaker to capture his attention. "I think he used a chat-up line of like, 'how do I break the ice?' in his first couple messages," Mouat recalled with a smile. This playful interaction marked the beginning of a meaningful relationship, further enriching his life outside of curling.

Becoming a Role Model in Sports

Bruce Mouat's journey stands as an inspiring testament to the impact of representation in sports, particularly for LGBTQ+ athletes. He acknowledged the scarcity of openly gay men in sports, especially in Great Britain, and expressed his hope that his story might encourage others. "There’s not many out gay men in sport, especially in Great Britain, but I think there is a sense that I am maybe now a role model," he said.

Mouat has received an outpouring of support and gratitude from numerous individuals who have been inspired by his courage and success. "I’ve had so many messages of people that have maybe struggled with participation in sports, that they're now feeling encouraged because of what they've seen that I've been able to do on the elite side of the sport," Mouat shared.

On the Road to Olympic Glory

With renewed confidence and a supportive team by his side, Bruce Mouat has continued to excel on the international stage. Recently, his team celebrated a hard-fought victory against Switzerland in the men's semi-final with an 8-5 win. Mouat and his teammates are now preparing to face Canada in the final, determined to bring home the gold.

Mouat's story is a powerful reminder of the strength found in vulnerability and the triumph of embracing one's true self. As he competes on the world stage, his journey continues to inspire many who are navigating their own paths to authenticity.
