Known for her remarkable tenure with the Phoenix Mercury, Griner is now set to begin a new chapter with the Atlanta Dream, marking a pivotal moment as she embarks on what she describes as a career “rebrand.”
The announcement came through a heartfelt social media post where Griner conveyed her excitement about joining Atlanta Dream on a one-year contract. This decision comes after more than a decade of playing with Phoenix Mercury, where she established herself as a formidable presence on the court and a fan favorite. “Free agency has been everything I wanted it to be,” Griner shared. “I was able to find where I wanted to go. I get to show them something different.”

After enduring 10 months in Russian detention, Griner was released in December 2022 through a complex prisoner exchange involving Viktor Bout, an arms dealer. Speaking about the ordeal, she expressed relief and a newfound perspective, emphasizing a desire to stay in the United States for her career, with the notable exception of representing the USA in international competitions.
“If I could have got them out or any of that, I would have. It hurts because no one should be in those conditions. Hands down, no one should be in any of the conditions I went through or they’re going through,” Griner reflected, addressing the complexities of her release compared to others still imprisoned.
Beyond her impressive athletic achievements, Griner's influence extends into wider cultural and social arenas. In 2023, she was recognized by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people globally, an acknowledgment of her impact and contributions beyond basketball.
