Rutger published: BRIEFS: A Burlesque Variety Show for Everyone
Learner • 99 hits LGBTQ+, London, Theatre, Drag, Burlesque

BRIEFS, an electrifying show by Australia-born Briefs Factory, has taken London by storm. This captivating production merges drag, dance, burlesque, theater, clowning, and circus arts, creating a spectacle that's as inspiring as its backstory.

A journey from warehouses

Since kicking off in 2008, Briefs Factory has dazzled audiences with high-energy performances. Starting from humble warehouse parties, they quickly soared onto festival stages and international tours. Their latest series at HERE at Outernet in London was born from Covid-19 pandemic challenges.

During these trying times, co-founders Fez and Mark rallied their performers in Brisbane. They channeled their shared emotions and experiences, leading Fez, in particular, who encouraged turning these vibes and feelings directly, a labor that culminated in a performance resonant with their lockdown journey.

Born out from resilience

This new BRIEFS experience in London showcases resilience and creativity at its core, transforming challenges faced by adversity, including Covid-19, a period which gave birth and turned a hard time as agile as possible, creating something vibrant and uplifting. We chatted with Fez and Mark about why BRIEFS strikes a chord with everyone, captivates British audiences, and highlights why queer performance art stands tall alongside mainstream art forms.

Why BRIEFS stands out

As Fez puts it, BRIEFS feels like a "party in a theater in a nightclub in a circus tent," embodying a spirit that's as eclectic as it gets. The show embraces variety, blending circus, burlesque, comedy, punk, and drag in a spectacular celebration that welcomes everyone.

The audience's diversity mirrors this inclusivity. Fez stresses on creating an environment where everyone feels at home, no matter where they're from. Here, art becomes a shared joy that unites people across all ages and orientations.

Why UK audiences love it

Fez and Mark feel that BRIEFS resonates with UK audiences thanks in part because shared cultural connections and a mutual passion exist, especially with theater. The show's humor and irreverence hit a sweet spot, perfectly aligning with London's vibrant theatrical tradition, creating a connection that UK audiences absolutely cherish.

They also honor host locations with thoughtful land acknowledgments that celebrate Indigenous peoples, forging an even stronger bond with local audiences.

BRIEFS' evolution

While BRIEFS proudly retains its essence, it keeps evolving. Classic acts like their fan dance get thrilling revamps with twists like powder puffs, keeping every performance fresh and engaging. By staying innovative, each appearance promises something new while staying true its roots.

Nudity, an integral element, appears with a playful unpredictability that respects its artistic value, adding intrigue without overshadowing artistry. Fez and Mark value surprising their audience with genuine flair and subtlety, allowing their craft and artistry, including elements like choreography, design, and storytelling, that shines through.

The power and importance in queer art

Fez champions queer performance art as an essential voice in today's arts scene. Despite battling challenges in funding and recognition, Briefs Factory remains fiercely committed, presenting art that's as authentic as it gets. Audience support, they believe, shows queer theater's important relevance as an art form. Ultimately, BRIEFS creates an inclusive, joyful space where art flourishes and connections bloom. With its celebration and diversity, creativity, and community, it invites everyone in on its colorful journey.

Catch this extraordinary performance while you can! BRIEFS runs at HERE at Outernet in London until July 26th. Don't miss out!
