Bridget's dedication has touched countless lives, yet, she recently lost her job when funding cuts hit LGBTQ+ health initiatives hard. “We offered vital help, especially connecting trans women like us with life-saving resources," she recalls. As a peer navigator, she was instrumental in linking people with medical care, legal help, and social support. But all this changed when an executive order sliced through funding meant specifically reserved for transgender research projects.
Vision and empowerment: Bridget's ongoing mission
Undeterred by setbacks, Bridget remains firmly invested in her community. Her dream? To turn her home in Detroit's neighborhoods, a sanctuary reminiscent in memory and spirit with Ruth Ellis, a beloved figure in local queer history. Bridget's passion was fueled at places like Ruth Ellis Center, where she grew and gave back, empowering others along her journey.
Currently, she balances work at a nearby supermarket, aiming higher. "It isn't my future, but it's a step closer," she admits. Her heart lies in community service, a calling she's pursued tirelessly over more than ten years, deeply personal amid her own struggles.
Navigating personal challenges and advocating change
Bridget's path has been far from easy. Chronic homelessness and survival sex work were harsh realities she faced. A pivotal moment came with her goddaughter Treasure's tragic loss, spurring her advocacy and drive toward change that matters.
Her support network includes allies like Kristi Gamarel, an academic championing LGBTQ+ health. Kristi notes trans individuals' incredible resilience and chosen families' critical role. She emphasizes community backing's significance and initiatives empowering trans women, especially those from marginalised communities like Bridget.

Bridget's determination fuels her plan: renovating her home as a refuge. She urges broader community engagement, acknowledging systemic hurdles like workplace bias and economic disparities facing trans individuals.
Even with challenges, Bridget and her peers persist, striving toward a future where trans rights aren't just acknowledged but respected. Her narrative underscores perseverance and showcases LGBTQ+ community's indomitable spirit in overcoming adversity.
