In a heartwarming ceremony held on a chilly afternoon just before Christmas, LGBTQ+ activist and former Pennsylvania state legislator Brian Sims wed his partner, Alex Drakos. The couple chose the Massachusetts State House in Boston for their intimate wedding, a location steeped in history as the first state to recognize same-sex marriages.
The wedding, witnessed by their parents and officiated by a close friend, took place amidst a snowy backdrop that added a magical touch to the occasion. "It was around 10 degrees," Drakos recalled, "so everyone was pretty resilient and kind to spend the time with us."
Sims, who currently serves as the CEO of Agenda PAC—an organization advocating for LGBTQ+ political representation—explained the significance of their choice of venue. "The golden-domed Massachusetts State House has played a vital role in the fight for marriage equality," Sims noted. This historic choice was a reminder of the progress made and the battles still to be fought for equal rights.
The couple's officiant, Julian Cyr, a Massachusetts state senator, delivered moving remarks before surprising the pair by leading them into an antechamber near the governor's office. The room, adorned with a beautiful Christmas tree and images of civil rights icons, provided a stunning setting for a toast in celebration of the newlyweds.
"It was the most champagne I've had in a single day," Drakos laughed, recalling the joyful celebration.
Sims and Drakos met in 2021 during a Bear Week Tea Dance in Provincetown, a ferry ride away from where they would eventually marry. Sims proposed on the beach two years later, and the couple initially planned a large wedding for the summer of 2025.
However, with the potential return of Donald Trump to the presidency, the couple reassessed their plans. "Would we be worried that our marriage would no longer be possible on the timeline we thought?" Drakos pondered on Election Day. The answer was yes, prompting them to expedite their marriage.
"These are very treacherous times," Sims acknowledged. "Having the legal protections that marriage affords is an assurance everyone deserves." He encouraged other couples to consider securing their rights while they still could.
Despite the political motivations behind their decision, the couple found that the intimate ceremony with their parents present held an unforeseen significance. "As soon as it was done, we both realized that having that moment with our parents was very special," Sims admitted.
The day concluded with more champagne and a "wonderful dinner," Drakos said, marking a perfect ending to their heartfelt ceremony. While the couple remains aware of the uncertain political landscape, they are grateful for the opportunity to marry and for the support of their family.
"While we still have the fruits of what so many advocates fought years for, we should avail ourselves of them," Sims emphasized, "while we continue to fight to defend and expand those rights."
The couple's love story serves as a poignant reminder of the personal and political challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community, as well as the enduring power of love and family.
