Rutger published: Brian Sims and Alex Drakos Tie the Knot in Boston Before Political Changes

In a heartwarming ceremony, LGBTQ+ rights advocate Brian Sims and his partner Alex Drakos celebrated their union in a Boston wedding just before the holiday season. On a brisk day at the Massachusetts State House, the couple exchanged vows surrounded by their closest family and friends. Sims, a former Pennsylvania state legislator and current CEO of Agenda PAC, shared the joyous news on Instagram, highlighting the deeply personal and political significance of their choice of venue.

The Massachusetts State House, with its iconic golden dome, holds a special place in the history of marriage equality in the United States. Being the first state to legalize same-sex marriage in 2004, it was a fitting location for a couple dedicated to advocating for LGBTQ+ rights. "It was a pretty incredible day," Sims reflected, as their families gathered to witness their commitment to one another.

A Ceremony Amidst a Winter Wonderland

The weather added a magical touch to the proceedings, with a fresh layer of snow dressing the city in white. "It was around 10 degrees, so everyone was pretty resilient and kind to spend the time," Drakos noted. The intimate gathering took place on a balcony overlooking Boston, providing a picturesque backdrop for a day full of love and anticipation.

Massachusetts State Senator Julian Cyr, who officiated the wedding, delivered heartfelt remarks to the couple. He then surprised them with a private moment in an antechamber of the governor's office. This room, adorned with a Christmas tree and images of civil rights icons, offered a poignant setting for a champagne toast among loved ones. "It was the most champagne I’ve had in a single day," Drakos quipped, adding a touch of humor to the celebration.

Love in Provincetown: A Journey and a Proposal

Sims and Drakos first crossed paths during a Bear Week Tea Dance in Provincetown in 2021. Their connection was undeniable, leading to a romantic proposal on the beach two years later. As the couple began to envision their future together, they initially planned a larger wedding for summer 2025. However, with the potential political landscape changes following the 2024 election, they decided to accelerate their plans.

Fearing that a shift in administration could jeopardize marriage equality, the couple opted for a more immediate ceremony. "Would we be worried that our marriage would no longer be possible on the timeline that we thought it would be?" Drakos pondered. With the support of their families, Sims and Drakos chose to wed sooner rather than later, ensuring their rights would be safeguarded.

Embracing the Moment

The decision to marry sooner than planned was both a strategic and emotional one. "These are very treacherous times we’re going into, and having the protections of the law," Sims said, "is an assurance that I think everyone deserves." He urged other couples to consider protecting their rights while continuing the fight for equality.

Ultimately, the day was about more than political strategy. "It was obviously something we felt like we had to do because of the times and things that could change," Sims confessed. Yet, as the day unfolded, the profound joy of sharing such an intimate occasion with their parents became evident. "We both recognized that having the intimate moment with our parents was a lot more special than we had maybe even considered that it would be," he reflected.

The wedding concluded with a heartfelt dinner, a fitting end to a day filled with love, resilience, and hope for the future. For Sims and Drakos, it was not only a celebration of their love but a testament to the enduring strength of the LGBTQ+ community.
