LGBTQ+ advocate and former Pennsylvania state legislator Brian Sims recently celebrated a significant milestone by marrying his partner, Alex Drakos. The couple chose to wed in Boston, Massachusetts, just before Christmas, ensuring their union was legally recognized before the new presidential administration began. The announcement was made by Sims on social media, where he shared the joyful news with friends, family, and followers.
The ceremony took place at the historic Massachusetts State House, a site chosen for its pivotal role in the fight for marriage equality in the United States. In 2004, Massachusetts became the first state to legalize same-sex marriage, making the location particularly meaningful for the couple. The intimate event was attended by their parents and officiated by their friend, Julian Cyr, a Massachusetts state senator who is also openly gay.
On what was described as a "frosty afternoon," Sims and Drakos exchanged vows surrounded by the beauty of Boston in winter. Drakos, an alum of UC Berkeley and an employee at Pfizer, remarked on the cold weather, noting that it was around 10 degrees, yet everyone involved showed incredible resilience and warmth by being part of their special day.
The weather played a significant role, as a snowstorm had covered Boston the night before the wedding, delaying the arrival of Sims’ parents. Nevertheless, they made it in time, adding to the magical backdrop of the ceremony held on a balcony overlooking the city. The couple’s officiant, Cyr, delivered heartfelt remarks, after which he surprised the newlyweds by inviting them to an antechamber adjacent to the governor’s office, richly adorned with historical and cultural memorabilia, including portraits of civil rights icons.
In this beautifully wood-paneled room, under the watchful eyes of these inspiring figures, the wedding party shared a toast, celebrating the union with plenty of champagne—a highlight for Drakos, who humorously noted it might have been the most champagne he had ever consumed in a single day.
The couple’s journey to this day began in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where they met during a Bear Week Tea Dance in 2021. Two years later, on the same beach, Sims proposed, setting their plans for a grand wedding in the summer of 2025. However, political uncertainties following recent elections prompted them to reconsider the timing of their marriage.
Sims, who currently serves as CEO of Agenda PAC, an organization focused on advocating for LGBTQ+ political representation, explained that the potential implications of a new administration led them to expedite their wedding plans. Reflecting on the situation, Sims and Drakos both expressed the sentiment that these "treacherous times" necessitated securing legal protections for their relationship sooner rather than later.
“Would we be worried that our marriage would no longer be possible on the timeline that we thought it would be?” Drakos recalled pondering on Election Day. With the support of family and the urgency of the moment, they decided to seize the opportunity to marry while it was still legally straightforward.
Sims urged other couples in similar circumstances to consider taking advantage of current legal rights while continuing to advocate for their expansion. "While we still have the fruits of what so many advocates fought years for, we should avail ourselves of them while we continue to fight to defend them and expand them," he stated, emphasizing both the urgency and the ongoing struggle for equality.
Despite the political motivations behind the timing, the couple found that the most meaningful aspect of their wedding day was the intimate gathering with their parents. The day concluded with a "wonderful dinner," and reflections on the importance of family over politics.
"It was obviously something we felt like we had to do because of the times and things that could change," Sims remarked, "but I will tell you that as soon as it was done, we both recognized that having the intimate moment with our parents was a lot more special than we had maybe even considered that it would be."
As they embark on this new chapter together, Sims and Drakos continue to celebrate their "firsts" as a married couple, cherishing the love and support of those closest to them.
