Rutger published: Brian Sims and Alex Drakos Marry Amid Political Concerns

LGBTQ+ activist and former Pennsylvania state legislator Brian Sims married his partner Alex Drakos in a private ceremony held in Boston shortly before the Christmas holidays. The couple exchanged vows at the historic Massachusetts State House, a location they chose for its symbolic importance in the journey toward marriage equality in the United States.

A Historic Setting

The wedding took place in Massachusetts, the first state to legalize same-sex marriage back in 2004. The golden-domed State House provided a fitting backdrop for the couple, who both have a deep appreciation for its role in the fight for marriage rights. The ceremony was intimate, attended only by their parents and officiated by a close friend of the couple.

As Brian Sims shared on social media, "The day was pretty incredible." The couple tied the knot on a chilly day, with temperatures around 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Despite the cold, their parents and close friends braved the weather to witness the momentous occasion.

A Magical Ceremony

The day before the wedding, a snowstorm swept through Boston, providing a winter wonderland backdrop for the ceremony. The scene was set on a balcony overlooking the city, creating a picturesque setting for the vows.

Julian Cyr, an openly gay Massachusetts state senator, officiated the wedding. After the ceremony, he led the wedding party into a beautifully decorated antechamber, complete with a fireplace and a Christmas tree, where they toasted to the newlyweds.

"It was the most champagne I’ve had in a single day, maybe ever," Drakos said, recalling the joyous celebration.

A Love Story

The couple's love story began in Provincetown, Massachusetts, known for its vibrant LGBTQ+ community. They met during a Bear Week Tea Dance in 2021 and have been inseparable ever since. In 2023, Sims proposed to Drakos on the beach in Provincetown, setting the stage for their future together.

Initially, the couple planned a larger wedding celebration for the summer of 2025. However, political tensions and the possibility of changes in federal policies under a new administration prompted them to reconsider their timeline.

Marriage Under Uncertainty

With the looming prospect of a second Trump administration, Brian Sims and Alex Drakos decided to expedite their wedding plans. "We wanted to ensure our marriage was recognized and protected under the law," Drakos explained. "It was something we felt we needed to do given the times we are in."

The couple was concerned about the potential rollback of LGBTQ+ rights and the impact it could have on their ability to marry. "These are very treacherous times," Sims said. "Having the legal protections of marriage is an assurance everyone deserves."

He encouraged other couples to consider taking similar steps to protect their rights: "While we still have the benefits of what so many advocates have fought for, we should take advantage of them and continue to fight to defend and expand these rights."

Family and Joy

Despite the political motivations for their expedited wedding, the couple found that the intimate ceremony with their families was more special than they had anticipated. "In the end, it was the family and the love we shared on that day that mattered most," Drakos said.

The wedding day concluded with more celebrations, including a delightful dinner with their families. "We realized that having a private moment with our parents was incredibly meaningful," Sims reflected.

The couple's story is a reminder of the importance of both love and activism in the fight for equality. As they continue their journey together, Brian Sims and Alex Drakos remain committed to advocating for LGBTQ+ rights and representation.
