Rutger published: Brave Ally Stands Up for Trans Woman Amid Harassment, Faces Violence

In Austin, Texas, a disturbing event unfolded when a transgender woman and her friends were attacked, prompting police involvement as they investigate whether this was a hate crime.

The woman, who has chosen not be named, was simply enjoying a day out with friends at Barton Springs Pool—a beloved and welcoming spot in Austin—when things suddenly took a dark turn. It started with three men making unwanted moves on her friends. What began as inappropriate attention soon spiraled, as these men allegedly started harassing them.

Unwelcome advances quickly escalate

A friend, who wasn't there at that moment, shared a detailed account on Reddit, backed up by video clips showing those involved leaving. Initially, it seemed like some ill-judged "flirting," but it soon became clear that it was much more sinister. One man began making offensive remarks about her transgender identity, which set off a torrent verbal abuse.

Reports from KXAN, a local NBC station, revealed that when a friend tried calming things down, it only got worse. “I don't agree with that lifestyle, it‘s gross,” one man reportedly sneered, pushing her friend—along with a bystander named Jarod—to step in and address these offensive comments.

Standing up against hate

Jarod and this courageous woman decided they had enough and confronted these men, demanding they explain their behavior. Sadly, things got violent fast. One man punched Jarod, knocking him out cold. When she tried helping Jarod, she too was attacked.

Local performer and activist Brigitte Bandit's videos captured some shocking moments. In one, you see a man in orange shorts attacking Tokyo, another woman, by shoving her down. A guy in black shorts who stepped in was punched too, escalating things more. Even as he lay unconscious, this assailant didn't stop, continuing his assault on those trying help.

Community rallies and police respond

The Austin Police Department showed up, finding emergency responders working on Jarod. He was rushed off and treated at a local hospital, dealing with serious injuries like a broken jaw and a concussion.

Jarod's family started a GoFundMe, talking about his injuries and how tough this time's been. As a construction worker and father without health insurance, he's looking at a mountain medical bills and no income while he heals. Thankfully, folks have rallied, raising over $68,000 so far.

The community support's been incredible. On Instagram, Jarod thanked everyone, saying, "I just wanted stand up a nice person I'd just met. The love from your community's been amazing, so thank you from bottom my heart."

Pursuing justice

Brigitte Bandit's Instagram update confirms that they've identified those involved, asking anyone with more info or evidence come forward. The Austin Police Department's urging witnesses or people with video footage help out with their investigation.

The woman praised Jarod's bravery and kindness, calling him “an absolute angel” his actions. They hadn't met before that day, but his courage made a huge impact. "He deserves every penny help cover his surgery and time off work look after himself and his kid," she said.

This awful incident reminds us all about struggles faced by transgender people and those who stand with them. It's clear there's still much work do in raising awareness and education fight against discrimination and violence. With investigation ongoing, there remains hope that justice will served, paving wave greater protection and understanding every community member.
