Rutger published: Brandi Carlile's Inspiring Concert Raises Over $600,000 for Families Affected by ICE in Minneapolis

Singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile has accomplished a remarkable feat by raising over $600,000 in support of families impacted by the presence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in Minneapolis. The funds were collected during her inspiring Be Human: A Concert for Minneapolis held at the Target Center arena.

The event, which took place on Saturday, February 21st, drew a live audience of approximately 12,000 people, with many more participating through an online live-stream. The proceeds are earmarked for The Advocates for Human Rights, a local non-profit organization dedicated to assisting individuals seeking asylum and providing legal representation for those detained by immigration authorities.

Supporting the Fight for Human Rights

The funds generated from the concert will be pivotal in advocating for the rights of immigrants and displaced individuals, providing them with much-needed access to free legal assistance. In a heartfelt message on Instagram, Brandi Carlile expressed her gratitude and admiration for the Minnesota community, highlighting the deep impact of the event.

"Minnesota is so deeply inspiring to me and the whole country. I can’t believe I got to sing for you and WITH you last night. So many people came together to celebrate your strength and conviction," Carlile remarked. "Together we raised over $600,000 for The Advocates for Human Rights, so that they can help and represent thousands of families who desperately need it."

A Personal Connection and a Call for Change

Earlier in the month, Carlile announced the establishment of a $25,000 grant aimed at supporting those detained by ICE. This commitment reflects her ongoing dedication to the cause and her personal investment in the well-being of affected families.

During her performance, Carlile delivered a moving rendition of the song "It’s Okay to Change Your Mind," targeting individuals who supported Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election. In a candid interview with Rolling Stone, she expressed empathy towards those who may feel deceived by their political choices.

"You got f****** scammed. We’re living in a scammy time," Carlile told the magazine, drawing parallels between her own experience of being misled into purchasing a vacuum cleaner and the political landscape. She encouraged people to overcome feelings of shame and embarrassment and instead channel their emotions into anger and positive change.

The Impact of ICE Operations in Minneapolis

Minneapolis has become the focal point of intensified immigration enforcement, with ongoing operations described as the largest ever conducted by U.S. officials. The aggressive tactics have drawn widespread condemnation, particularly following the tragic deaths of two U.S. citizens, Renée Good and Alex Pretti, who were killed by ICE agents while protesting.

Addressing the audience, Carlile shared her heartfelt connection to the city, stating, "You have been through so much… and you’ve been on my mind every second of every day. This is home to me."

In her conversation with Rolling Stone, Carlile argued that the current administration's approach is more focused on "violent theatre and dominance" rather than addressing the real issues of immigration. She remains hopeful that those who initially supported Trump can recognize this and change their perceptions.
