Brad's Journey: A Life Transformed by a Heart Transplant

Brad Tennis found peace in running. The meditative rhythm of his feet striking the pavement brought him a sense of calm and focus like nothing else. Over time, Brad’s dedication to his passion paid off, culminating in his qualification for the prestigious Boston Marathon. Yet, as he chased his running aspirations, an undetected threat loomed over his heart.

In November 2018, Brad received shocking news: he was diagnosed with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC), a rare and serious heart condition that causes the heart muscle to deteriorate. This condition significantly raises the risk of abnormal heartbeats and sudden cardiac death. To protect him, doctors implanted an internal defibrillator and asked him to abandon running, as intensive exercise could accelerate the disease's progression.

Initially, Brad managed to come to terms with his condition. However, by 2020, he began experiencing Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (ICD) shocks, indicating life-threatening arrhythmias. Despite numerous procedures and treatments, the shocks increased in frequency. By 2023, the burden of the disease, combined with the frequent ICD shocks, led to worsening heart failure. Everyday activities like climbing stairs became breath-taking challenges, and playing with his children or keeping up at work felt increasingly difficult. His once vibrant world was shrinking.

Come February 2024, Brad embarked on a journey with Johns Hopkins Hospital to get listed for a heart transplant. Mere weeks later, after enduring another shock and undergoing extensive testing, a doctor placed him on ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), a critical life-support system for failing hearts. Not long after, Brad received life-changing news: a compatible heart was available, and surgery was imminent.

Brad's organ transplant marked the dawn of a new chapter. With renewed hope, he focused on recovery, gaining strength and learning to navigate life with his new heart. That summer, doctors cleared him to resume exercising, allowing him to enjoy activities he had dearly missed, like playing with his kids.

“I would never say I’m back to feeling normal. I must always manage my stress and activities to safeguard my health and new heart,” Brad reflects. “But the transplant was lifesaving and means I can continue building a life with my husband and children.”

As Brad continues to move forward, he and his family are relishing life once more. He has even bought a new pair of running shoes, hopeful that he might soon return to regularly running.

“Organ donation and transplant have reopened doors I thought were permanently closed,” Brad shares. “They’ve given me the chance to be present and live a full, happy life with my husband, son, and daughter.”

His husband, Drew, adds, “Every day, I’m reminded of Brad’s strength, resilience, and bravery.”

Brad holds immense gratitude for his organ donor, acknowledging the profound gift of life and hope he has received. “It’s incredible to give life and hope. Even in tragedy, someone gave me a gift… a second chance.” He encourages everyone to consider registering as donors to save lives.

The journey from diagnosis to recovery has profoundly changed Brad’s outlook. Armed with new hope and a zest for life, he embraces each day with gratitude and the desire to make lasting memories with his family. His story is a testament to resilience, love, and the transformative power of organ donation.
