Coming together at D.C. Black Pride's 34th celebration

The 34th annual D.C. Black Pride kicked off on Friday, May 23, at Capital Hilton, and you could just feel it in your bones—the electric energy that came with such a gathering. This Opening Reception was all about celebrating diversity and resilience within our Black LGBTQ+ community. The event attracted an incredible mix: presenters, speakers, and entertainers who all played a part in making this night unforgettable.

As folks walked through those doors, they were met with both excitement and warmth. The venue was decked out beautifully, echoing pride and unity with every decoration. And, emceeing this fabulous evening was none other than Anthony Oakes. If you haven't experienced his lively humor before, you're in luck, because he kept everyone energized and engaged all night long.

Performances that lit up our souls

We were treated with a lineup that was nothing short but stellar. Ts Madison, a cherished icon in our community, kicked things off with her signature charm and presence that just draws you in. Her performance was all about empowerment and joy, setting a positive tone right from go.

Next up were Monroe Alisa and Billy The Goat, who took it up a notch. Their dynamic energy and vibrant pride had everyone dancing and cheering, making it clear how important visibility and representation are in our Black LGBTQ+ community.

Then came Kerri Colby and Lolita Leopard, who really knew how wow a crowd. Kerri, with her strong stage presence and stunning outfits, got enthusiastic applause, while Lolita Leopard completely mesmerized everyone with her charisma and moves.

Apple Brown Betty and Heather Mahogani also hit that stage with performances that celebrated individuality and self-expression. They showed us all how powerful art can be in bringing people together and inspiring change.

Messages wrapped in art and hope

Lyrical Mar's spoken word was like a heartfelt anthem, capturing both struggles and victories within our Black LGBTQ+ community. His touching words were a beacon, inspiring hope and pushing us toward action.

Ink and Bang Garçon lit up our souls with their musical performances, their beats and soulful melodies getting everyone up on their feet. Their music served as an empowering backdrop, combining celebration with reflection.

But it wasn't just about performances; it was about building community and connection. The shared laughter, applause, and camaraderie fostered a strong sense that we all belong. It highlighted just how resilient and strong our Black LGBTQ+ community truly stands.

As folks left at evening's end, they carried a renewed sense pride and purpose, eager keep celebrating throughout weekend. The D.C. Black Pride Opening Reception was a smashing success, perfectly setting things up weekend full love, solidarity, and empowerment.
