A disturbing encounter: Black drag queen faces racial abuse in Cambridge

Picture this: Guillotina, a Black drag queen, recently had a harrowing experience with racial abuse at Cambridge City Centre. Imagine this happening in a community known globally as an academic hub. It seems this troubling incident, reportedly involving Cambridge University students, has shone a light on racial tensions that clearly linger.

Shocking slur at a late-night McDonald's

It was around 3 am on a typical Saturday night when Guillotina stepped inside a McDonald's, craving some late-night comfort food. Instead, what they got was anything but comforting. A racial slur hurled by someone in a group left Guillotina and their friend in disbelief. The group? They laughed it off and made a quick exit. Left standing there, Guillotina was stunned, recalling, "We were both shell-shocked." Sure enough, by then, those responsible had already vanished.

Seeking justice while dealing with distress

In search and hope, Guillotina approached a security guard outside, but their pleas fell on deaf ears. Feeling at a loss, they decided a police report was their only recourse, hoping it might bring justice or at least acknowledgment. Emotionally, though, this took a heavy toll, making them feel uneasy everywhere they went. "I didn't realize I process emotions on a 3-5 working day delay... now I feel like crap. Like, total crap," Guillotina expressed. The anxiety cut so deep that they took a week off work, terrified it might happen again. This wasn't an isolated case; it was part and parcel with a wider racial issue pervasive in Cambridge.

Cambridge's racial climate under scrutiny

Guillotina's encounter casts a glaring spotlight on Cambridge's racial climate. Speaking from personal experience, Guillotina didn't mince words: "Cambridge does f**king suck if you're Black. If I—a random Black person—can have n****r hurled at me so comfortably... then no one in their right mind would want live here." Importantly, they clarified it wasn't connected with their identity as a drag performer; it was entirely racially motivated. This incident serves as a jarring example that casual racism persists.

Cambridge University under fire

The University itself isn't above criticism. A startling report by End Everyday Racism (EER) back in 2020 flagged at least 117 racist incidents in and around campus from 2018-2020, over half happening within college departments. The university's veterinary school even faced accreditation problems over weak responses towards racism, highlighting ongoing struggles in supporting marginalized communities, including Black and Asian students. In 2018, Micha Frazer-Carroll, writing in The Guardian, acknowledged that Cambridge University has a "problem with race," urging open dialogue. "If we truly want inclusive and productive university environments, we must listen," she wrote, emphasizing often-overlooked voices. Vice-chancellor Stephen J Toope responded by stating, "Our university should be free from racism, discrimination, prejudice, and harassment. Achieving this objective requires an honest acknowledgment."

Calls grow louder: action and dialogue needed now

Guillotina's ordeal has sparked necessary conversations around racial equity and safety in both academic circles and public domains. It underscores a pressing need: we mustn't just talk; we must act meaningfully if we want inclusive, welcoming spaces. Meanwhile, Cambrigeshire Police have been approached, aiming verify whether an investigation has started. It pushes forward an ongoing dialogue on steps needed toward racial justice.
