Rutger published: Bimini Bon Boulash Candidly Shares Journey with Addiction and Mental Health

Beloved Drag Race UK star Bimini Bon Boulash has shared a heartfelt account of their personal experiences with addiction, depression, and anxiety. In a recent episode of their podcast, The Pieces, Bimini opened up about the struggles they faced with substance abuse and mental health following their rise to fame.

At 31, the well-known drag performer and musician reflected on their early twenties, a time marked by challenges with substance use. Bimini revealed that they had achieved sobriety for an entire year before making their memorable appearance on Drag Race UK in 2021, where they captivated audiences and reached the final round of the competition.

A Year of Sobriety Before Fame

Despite their success on the show, Bimini admitted to feeling unworthy of the accolades and recognition they received. "I felt so much pressure, almost like a fraud, and I didn’t deserve it," they confessed. This internal struggle led them to relapse into addiction, creating a challenging cycle that has persisted over the years.

"There have been some incredible opportunities, and I've done things I only dreamed of," Bimini stated. "But over those years, I've battled with addiction, depression, and anxiety, and it's been a continuous cycle."

The performer expressed their difficulties in accepting and acknowledging their struggles, feelings often compounded by a sense of shame. Yet, they recognized the importance of breaking this harmful pattern.

Career Challenges and Mental Health

Bimini also shared experiences of navigating the complexities of the entertainment industry, which included dealing with powerful figures who manipulated their career prospects. These experiences led to significant distress and a loss of credibility among fans, notably when issues arose with merchandise distribution.

"I was silenced, and it affected me in such a dark way that I couldn’t cope," Bimini admitted. "People were scammed, and I felt deeply responsible. Unfortunately, it all caught up to me, and since then, it has been a battle for the last three and a half years."

Beyond professional challenges, Bimini’s mental health was further strained by feelings of uncertainty about their career and the impact of gossip surrounding their struggles. "There was a lot of gossip within the community about my troubles with addiction and drugs," Bimini explained. "Friends I felt hurt by were talking about my experiences rather than asking if I needed help."

Finding Strength Amidst Struggles

Although there were times when Bimini felt a renewed sense of strength, they acknowledged that progress was not "linear." They faced moments of deep despair but managed to persevere and continue their journey of recovery.

After seeking professional help, Bimini was diagnosed with anxiety and depression. They have since returned to therapy and are committed to healing. "I need to let go of all that pain and trauma," Bimini shared, emphasizing the importance of self-forgiveness and moving forward.

"I have a substance abuse disorder," they stated. "This is something ongoing, and I am trying my hardest to battle with and deal with. I will get there, and I know I will."

For Bimini, breaking the cycle of addiction involves acknowledging their problem and finding empowerment in admission. "I can’t keep continuing that cycle, and it needs to break," they declared. "And the only way to do that is to admit that I have a problem. And there’s power there."

We invite you to share your thoughts on Bimini’s courageous story. Remember to keep the conversation respectful.
