Billy Porter to Make Directorial Debut
Renowned for his powerhouse performances in "Pose" and "Cabaret," Billy Porter is stepping into a new role this summer as he makes his directorial debut. Porter will be taking the helm of This Bitter Earth, a compelling play by Harrison David Rivers. Scheduled to run at London's esteemed Soho Theatre, this production marks an exciting new chapter in Porter’s illustrious career.
Omari Douglas Takes the Lead
The play will feature Omari Douglas, best known for his standout performance in the critically acclaimed series "It’s A Sin." Douglas has recently captivated audiences on stage in the queer family drama Lavender, Hyacinth, Violet, Yew and in the provocative stage adaptation of Hanya Yanagihara’s A Little Life. In This Bitter Earth, Douglas takes on the role of Jessie, a playwright grappling with complex personal and political dilemmas.
Exploring Love and Activism
At the heart of This Bitter Earth is the tumultuous relationship between Jessie and his boyfriend Neil, a passionate Black Lives Matter activist. As tensions rise, Neil challenges Jessie on his political disengagement, leading to a confrontation that forces the couple to navigate the intersections of race, class, and love. The play explores the challenges they face while asking the poignant question, "What is the real cost of standing on the sidelines?"
Cast and Performances
Joining Douglas is Alexander Lincoln, known for his roles in "Emmerdale" and "In From The Side." Lincoln will portray Neil, bringing depth to this intense dynamic. Lincoln's recent work includes the queer romance film A Night Like This, which premiered at BFI Flare, London’s LGBTQ+ film festival.
According to an official synopsis, "As passions and priorities collide, this couple is forced to reckon with issues of race, class and the bravery it takes to love out loud." The play promises to be "an intimate, romantic, and gripping portrayal" of a young Black writer and his white activist lover.
Performance Details
This Bitter Earth will run at the Soho Theatre, located on Dean Street, from 18 June to 26 July 2025. Tickets are already available, offering audiences the chance to experience this powerful production firsthand.
Billy Porter’s Vision
Expressing his excitement about the project, Porter praised playwright Harrison David Rivers as a "creative visionary." Porter described the play as "a searingly poignant and necessary exploration of love and loss," viewed through the lens of the challenges facing contemporary America.
"Simple. Complex. Direct and filled with compassion all at once. I’m thrilled to be a part of bringing this very special piece to life," Porter stated. While This Bitter Earth marks his directorial debut, Porter is no stranger to the stage. His career began in the ensemble of the 1991 Broadway production of Miss Saigon, and he has since become a staple of the theatre world.
A Trailblazer in the Arts
Billy Porter is celebrated not only for his talent but also for breaking barriers. He became the first Black, gay man to win a lead actor award at the Emmys. In 2013, Porter won the Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical for his role as Lola in Kinky Boots, and he earned a second Tony for producing the musical A Strange Loop, which won Best Musical in 2022.
Currently starring as Emcee in the West End revival of Cabaret, Porter is on the cusp of achieving EGOT status, having already secured an Emmy, a Grammy, and two Tony Awards. “Who doesn’t want to win an award?” Porter remarked, emphasizing the importance of recognition for a Black, queer artist in opening doors and changing the cultural landscape.
Audiences eager to witness Porter’s directorial expertise and the dynamic performances of Douglas and Lincoln can look forward to a thought-provoking evening at the Soho Theatre. Don’t miss the opportunity to engage with this powerful work that resonates with the ongoing dialogues around race, activism, and love.
