In a recent episode of Big Brother, contestant Sam, a 27-year-old Zumba instructor and musician known as Smashby, candidly discussed their gender identity in a conversation with fellow housemate George, a 23-year-old parish councillor. This enlightening dialogue not only provided insight into Sam’s personal journey but also addressed widespread myths surrounding healthcare for transgender youth.
The exchange began with Sam elaborating on the concept of drag shows, which prompted George to inquire why Sam refrains from participating in drag themselves. Sam responded thoughtfully, "I just love being a personality as myself. I think it's enough and I blend gender enough to be entertaining and eye-catching, so it works."
When George inquired about Sam's gender identity, Sam explained, "I live life as me. If anyone wants to call me something, they can. I'm not bothered really. It's more about making others feel comfortable while I live as myself." On social media, Sam identifies with he/him, they/them, and she/her pronouns, reflecting their fluid approach to gender.
George pressed further, querying if Sam had "always been like that" in terms of their gender expression. Sam shared, "I've become more vocal and visually expressive about it in the past few years. I always saw myself this way since childhood, but I lacked the vocabulary and understanding until joining the community."
The conversation then ventured into more challenging territory with George questioning the historical existence of "ambiguous genders." Sam asserted, "Yes, I believe so, but perhaps without labels or specific terminology."
However, George expressed concern, suggesting that a gender "ideology" might be influencing vulnerable young minds, leading them to prematurely question their gender identity. He voiced apprehension about children potentially undergoing irreversible medical procedures and later regretting them.
Sam adeptly countered these concerns, clarifying that in the UK, gender-affirming surgeries are not performed on minors. "A lot of kids can't have the operation because it's illegal," Sam noted. "Before last year, underage individuals could access hormone treatments after extensive evaluations, which are reversible."
Sam highlighted that these treatments required thorough mental health assessments, ensuring that young individuals were indeed transgender before proceeding. "It was about giving them the option to pause puberty and decide for themselves," Sam explained, emphasizing that major life-altering decisions occur only in adulthood.
Recent changes in UK policy, specifically the "indefinite ban" on puberty blockers for those under 18, introduced by the health secretary in December 2024, have sparked significant debate. According to research published in the Journal of Gender Studies, this ban has caused considerable distress among trans youth.
Sam addressed the misinformation, arguing that such policies and public opinions often stem from a lack of understanding. "It's probably more misinformation and propaganda," they suggested.
Scientific research supports Sam’s stance, with a March 2024 study in Jama Pediatrics revealing that merely one percent of trans teenagers detransition following medical interventions like puberty blockers or hormone therapy. Furthermore, a study from October of the previous year found that 97 percent of US and Canadian youth receiving such care reported high satisfaction.
Additionally, a May 2024 study in the American Journal of Surgery reported that less than 0.5 percent of individuals who accessed hormone replacement therapy expressed regret, with some realizing a non-binary identity or wishing for more time to explore their gender.
These discussions on Big Brother not only highlight the importance of visibility and representation in media but also underscore the necessity of informed conversations about gender diversity and trans healthcare. Sam's openness and eloquence serve as a beacon for understanding and respect.
