The recent wildfires in Los Angeles, California have caused widespread destruction, claiming 24 lives and affecting numerous communities. Among the casualties of this natural disaster is a cherished lesbian bar located in the Silver Lake neighborhood, which has announced its permanent closure due to the severe impacts of the fires.
The Ruby Fruit, a cozy and well-loved wine bar and restaurant, was a vibrant space that catered to the LGBTQ+ community, particularly those who identified as women. Known for its welcoming atmosphere, the bar was a sanctuary for many seeking a sense of belonging.
On social media, the owners of The Ruby Fruit shared their heart-wrenching decision: "With a heavy heart, we announce that continuing operations at The Ruby Fruit is no longer feasible. The financial impact of the ongoing natural disaster has made it impossible to sustain our business."
Opened in 2023 on Sunset Boulevard, The Ruby Fruit was a rare addition to the dwindling number of lesbian bars in the United States. At the time of its opening, it was the only bar in Los Angeles dedicated to LGBTQ+ women, marking an important milestone in the community. Later, another venue, Honey’s at Star Love in East Hollywood, opened to serve a similar purpose.
The Ruby Fruit was named in homage to Rita Mae Brown’s 1973 novel "The Rubyfruit Jungle," a seminal work in lesbian literature that resonates with many in the community. Co-owned by Emily Bielagus and Mara Herbkersman, the bar quickly became more than just a place to enjoy a drink; it was a community hub where people from diverse backgrounds could connect.
Despite its small size of just 500 square feet, The Ruby Fruit made a significant impact in its almost two-year run. The establishment was renowned for its "mutable energy," a characteristic that set it apart from similar venues. The owners prioritized creating a welcoming environment where every customer felt valued and appreciated.
"After we opened The Ruby Fruit, we discovered that our role extended beyond being just a restaurant. We became a vital community space," said co-owner Mara Herbkersman. "Our goal was to offer a welcoming space for all members of the LGBTQ+ community."
The bar hosted regular events such as TRANScendent Tuesdays, a mixer for gender-expansive individuals, as well as Queereoke and Verse4Verse Poetry, a queer open mic night. These events often drew crowds that filled not only the bar but also the surrounding parking area.
In the aftermath of the fires, Bielagus and Herbkersman have shifted The Ruby Fruit’s focus to support relief efforts. The space is currently being used as a donation drop-off center, aiding those affected by the wildfires.
"Even now, we see people loading their cars with supplies to deliver to shelters and resource centers," the owners shared on their Instagram farewell post. "We ask our community to stay tuned for more updates on how they can help."
Though The Ruby Fruit’s doors are closed, the love and support it provided to the Los Angeles LGBTQ+ community will be remembered fondly. "We are immensely grateful for the support we’ve received over the past nearly two years. Thank you, LA. Thank you, queer family."
