B.D. Wong, an acclaimed actor known for his versatile roles in film and television, recently faced backlash for a problematic comment made on social media. Wong, who is openly gay, took to Instagram to apologize for a remark that many perceived as racially insensitive, directed towards a Black influencer. He expressed remorse, writing, "I'm sorry if this #wtfbd moment tarnished any respect you may've had for me."
The incident occurred when Wong commented on an Instagram post by Mike Holston, a popular social media influencer with the handle @TheRealTarzan. Holston, a Black man celebrated for his engaging animal content, shared a photo with a furry creature, inviting his followers to "Name this animal… wrong answers only."
In a since-deleted comment, Wong responded, "It appears to be a Black man," as reported by Variety. This remark was quickly recognized as perpetuating harmful stereotypes that have historically dehumanized Black individuals by comparing them to animals.
As screenshots of his comment began spreading across social media, Wong moved to address the growing criticism. He issued a public apology on Threads, a social media platform, acknowledging his error and the hurt it caused. "Y’all I made a very bad joke," he wrote. "As most people in hot water do, I deleted it for Damage Control but it’s out there & continues to hurt & disappoint & I’m really sorry about the hurt part."
He continued, "Super dumb, but I tried to follow the ‘Wrong Answers Only’ prompt with the wrongest answer. This succeeded only in that it was Super Wrong." Wong recognized the impact of his words and expressed regret for his actions, showing an understanding of how serious and damaging such jokes can be.
Hours later, Wong elaborated further on his initial apology, stating, "I want to elaborate on a racist comment I posted, to clarify that I recognize & accept the responsibility for how terrible it is. It’s also wrong to try to ‘explain’ anything, & I think that causes a further breaking down in folks’ trust.”
He added, "Let me please spend the energy on how wrong I know it is to exploit a despicable, racist trope in the supposed spirit of humor; I do know better, but again no excuses. Very sorry for the hurt I’ve caused & for taking lightly something so deeply injurious.”
Wong's willingness to own up to his mistake and apologize openly is an important step in acknowledging the damage caused by such remarks, and it highlights the necessity of creating a safer and more respectful online environment.
B.D. Wong is no stranger to the spotlight. He won a Tony Award for his debut on Broadway in 1988, portraying a gender-bending Chinese spy in the play M. Butterfly by gay playwright David Henry Hwang. Over the years, he has become known for his roles in major films and television series, such as Dr. Henry Wu in the Jurassic Park franchise and the character Whiterose in Mr. Robot.
In addition to his acting accolades, Wong has been an advocate for diversity and inclusion in Hollywood. His roles have often reflected a commitment to challenging stereotypes, including his portrayal of Captain Li Shang in Disney’s animated film Mulan.
Wong’s contributions to the entertainment industry extend beyond acting, as he has authored a memoir and participated in various projects that promote inclusivity and understanding. Despite the recent controversy, his career continues to reflect a dedication to artistic expression that bridges cultural gaps.
The incident involving Wong is a reminder of the importance of accountability, especially for public figures with influential platforms. As a society, we must be vigilant against perpetuating harmful stereotypes and work towards fostering an environment that celebrates diversity and encourages respectful dialogue.
It is crucial for individuals, particularly those in the public eye, to consider the impact of their words and jokes. Wong’s apology serves as a reminder that even unintended harm requires acknowledgment and a willingness to learn and grow from mistakes.
By addressing the issue head-on and engaging with the community in a genuine and apologetic manner, Wong sets an example that others can follow in striving to make the internet a safer space for everyone.
