By Sarah Bricker Hunt | Two men, Momed Ali and Majed Mahmoud, are facing serious terrorism charges after federal authorities accused them plot an attack on LGBTQ+ bars in Ferndale, Michigan, around Halloween. On November 3, federal court documents revealed details about this chilling plan.
The FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force arrested Ali and Mahmoud on October 31. When they were detained, authorities seized tactical gear, AR-15-style rifles, ammunition, and other damning items from their locations in Dearborn and Inkster. The 72-page complaint outlines their activities and suggests they were motivated by extremist ideologies connected with ISIS. Part and parcel with their plan was scoping out LGBTQ+ venues as possible targets.
Apparently, Ali and Mahmoud were inspired by past attacks like those that struck Paris in 2015, where coordinated ISIS assaults killed 130 people. Surveillance cameras caught them on video practicing at gun ranges, which heightened officials' concerns about their intentions.
The Paris attacks hit several locations, including a devastating strike at Bataclan concert hall. In chilling discussions, Ali and Mahmoud allegedly mentioned pulling off a similar attack in America, reminiscent perhaps, even, 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, which claimed 49 lives.
Investigators found that Ali and Mahmoud used "pumpkins" as a code word when talking about their planned Halloween attack, a spooky nod towards their intended timeline.
The authorities have documented quite a bit about how these men prepared. Ali bought firearms, including a shotgun and an AR-15-style rifle, plus a device that could ramp up these guns' fire rate. Mahmoud was also busy buying an AR-15-style rifle and stashing away more than 1,600 rounds.
In September, Ali and Mahmoud, along with a minor, visited Ferndale multiple times. They zeroed in on areas along Woodward Avenue near East Nine Mile Road, known as a lively hangout spot in LGBTQ+ scene, thanks its numerous clubs and bars.
Once news broke, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi took a moment on platform X praise law enforcement's quick action, calling them "our American heroes" preventing a terror attack. Both suspects are charged with crimes linked arms trafficking terrorism and made their first court appearance November 3.
Their lawyers aren't saying much, but at least one has dismissed these charges as blown out proportion.
Ferndale's LGBTQ+ community has shown incredible resilience in light these events. Soho, a well-loved local bar, turned social media thank law enforcement their quick response. They shared message: "While it seems we weren't directly targeted, we've got commend swift action ensuring our safety."
Their message echoed confidence in local police efforts, highlighting strong sense security in Ferndale thanks those solid relationships with law enforcement. Soho condemned any attacks against LGBTQ+ folk and stood firm its dedication tolerance peace.
Business goes on as usual Soho and other places in neighborhood, with heartfelt thanks from patrons and neighbors alike.
