This summer, Austin Butler is gearing up to captivate audiences as Hank Thompson, a washed-up ex-baseball player, in the highly anticipated crime comedy Caught Stealing. Directed by the acclaimed Darren Aronofsky, the film promises a gripping tale set in the gritty landscape of 1990s New York City.
In a recent interview, Butler opened up about the unconventional methods he employed to truly inhabit his character. "I spent a lot of time studying baseball players, particularly their physiques," Butler revealed with a grin. "It was crucial for me to understand the physicality of a player, even down to their posture and the way they move."
Butler's role as Hank Thompson is complex: a former athlete who now tends bar, his quiet life is upended by a series of violent events that pull him into the city's criminal underworld. The transformation required Butler to convincingly portray a man who could both play ball and handle himself in a high-stakes game of survival.
Working alongside renowned trainer Beth Lewis, known for her work with Hugh Jackman, Butler embarked on a rigorous training regime. "Beth was fantastic," he said. "She understood the balance I needed to strike between looking like an athlete and someone who's let himself go a bit."
The training focused heavily on building core strength and stamina. "We did a lot of hip thrusters and other lower body exercises," Butler detailed. "It was all about creating the physique of someone who had been athletic but had perhaps overindulged in the pleasures of pizza and beer over the years."
Through this dedication, Butler achieved the look of a former baseball player, which was a crucial aspect of Hank's character. "I even had to retire some of my favorite pants—they just wouldn't fit over my newly acquired muscles," he laughed.
Darren Aronofsky, the director behind innovative films like Black Swan and The Whale, provided Butler with visual inspiration throughout the preparation process. "Darren sent me a ton of images of baseball players," Butler explained. "He wanted me to pay close attention to their form and how their lifestyle shaped their bodies."
These images served as a motivational tool, pushing Butler to immerse himself fully into the role. "Darren would often point out specific details in those photos, encouraging me to focus on the unique characteristics that defined these athletes," he shared.
Beyond the physical transformation, Butler delved deep into Hank's mindset. "The character of Hank is caught in a whirlwind of chaos," Butler said. "I spent a lot of time thinking about how a person would react when their world turns upside down overnight."
The film’s plot, a dark adaptation of Charlie Huston's cult noir novel, challenges its protagonist with moral grey areas and a fight for survival against a backdrop of crime and corruption. For Butler, capturing this internal struggle was as important as the external transformation.
Joining Butler in the film is an ensemble cast including Zoë Kravitz, Bad Bunny, Matt Smith, Regina King, and Liev Schreiber. "Working with such talented actors elevated the experience," Butler noted. "The dynamic on set was incredible, and I think audiences will see that chemistry on screen."
Set to hit theaters on August 29, Caught Stealing promises to be a unique blend of humor, action, and drama. Butler teases, "It’s not just about the crime or the comedy—it’s about the human condition and what people do when pushed to their limits."
As anticipation builds, audiences are eager to see Butler's portrayal of a man wrestling with his past, his limitations, and a world that refuses to let him go quietly.
