Rutger published: Aubrey Plaza Opens Up About Grieving Her Husband's Death

Aubrey Plaza talks grief on Good Hang podcast

Aubrey Plaza recently joined her good friend Amy Poehler on an episode full of heartfelt moments on Good Hang. She opened up about her deep grief following her husband Jeff Baena's death. It was clear that this heartbreaking event has profoundly changed her life, and she described her experience managing grief as a "daily struggle."

Jeff Baena, an acclaimed filmmaker known for films like Life After BethJoshy, and Spin Me Round, was discovered deceased earlier this year near the Hollywood Hills. His death, ruled a suicide, shocked his loved ones and fans alike. At just 47, Baena left behind a legacy of creative brilliance and a gaping void in the lives of those who knew him.

Remembering a deep bond and journey together

Plaza and Baena started their relationship in 2011, growing their bond over time into a cherished partnership celebrated by many. After collaborating on multiple projects, they tied the knot in 2021, and their deep connection was apparent to fans and friends.

Facing life's ups and downs without Jeff

During her podcast chat, Plaza gave listeners a glimpse into her emotional state, shedding light on how she navigates life after losing her partner. "I feel overall I'm here and I'm functioning, and I'm really grateful to be moving through the world," she shared. "I'm OK. It's a daily struggle, obviously."

Using a vivid image inspired by the 2025 film The Gorge with Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy, Plaza described her grief. In the movie, two characters stand guard over a massive chasm filled with monsters—an allegory she found fitting. "At all times, there's a giant ocean of awfulness that's right there, and I can see it," Plaza noted. "Sometimes I just want to dive into it and be in it, and sometimes I just look at it. And sometimes I try and get away from it, but it's always there."

Finding laughter and strength amidst loss

Despite her heavy loss, Plaza's innate humor and resilience shone through in her chat with Poehler. They skillfully shifted from somber topics to lighter ones, with Poehler helping guide the conversation toward other aspects of life and work.

While on the podcast, Plaza also promoted her latest film, Honey Don't! In it, she plays an enigmatic character alongside Margaret Qualley. The movie tells the story of Honey, an intrepid lesbian detective investigating an ominous church and possible cult.

The strength in community and support

Opening up about deeply personal matters in public highlights just how vital community and support are during times of grief. Plaza's candidness provides a relatable story for those navigating similar challenges, reminding us all of the invaluable support systems available when facing loss and mental health struggles.

Suicide is indeed tragic but preventable. Those facing similar hardships should never hesitate to reach out for help. Organizations like Samaritan and Mind the UK, as well as the National Suicide Prevention Line the US, offer essential support for those in need.

Aubrey Plaza's journey through grief, which she shared so openly, speaks volumes about her strength and the lasting impact of love and loss. Her real, open story will resonate with many, bringing comfort and understanding to those navigating similar paths.
